Target group

The Mainz Masters course in Media Dramaturgy is unique at German universities. It provides in-depth knowledge of the History, Aesthetics and theory of audiovisual media with a clear specialisation towards moving images The specialisation is on the cross-media examination of dramaturgical functions and staging strategies. The course is devoted to aesthetic patterns and narrative forms in a cross-media context that ranges from film, television and theatre to radio and acoustic art to games and web-based narrative forms. The course picks up on transmedia interfaces and changing processes in a practical way and enables critically reflective research into a wide range of media formats. There is also the possibility of gaining insights into practical media work processes and specialised areas such as Media Law and Media Management. The two-year course prepares graduates for a job that requires critical analytical skills in dealing with audiovisual media.

If the Bachelor degree certificate is not available by the application deadline, but at least 135 credit points can be demonstrated: Submit a certificate of study and examinations and the average grade achieved so far. (This certificate must be issued by the relevant higher education, original or officially authenticated copy). After enrolment, the diploma must be submitted. If the degree was obtained abroad: officially authenticated copy of a certificate of recognition (responsible: Student Service - Admission International).

Admission requirements

The requirement is a Bachelor's degree in the core or minor subject Film Studies in the integrated Mainz field of study Culture/Drama/Film or a degree in a related Film, Art or Media Studies subject with at least 30 credit points in the area of film, television and new media at a university in Germany or abroad. For applications submitted before the completion of the Bachelor's degree, at least 20 of the required subject-specific credit points must be demonstrated by the end of the application period. In the first semester of the Master's degree course, a Bachelor's degree certificate providing evidence of the required 30 credit points must be submitted. Applicants who obtained their higher education entrance qualification neither at a German-speaking institution nor through a degree course conducted in German are required to provide evidence of German proficiency at the level of the “German Language Test for Admission to Higher Education for Foreign Students” (DSH).
