Target group
The Master's degree in German studies can either be studied with a focus on German linguistics or German literature. The Master’s degree deepens the analytical and theoretical knowledge acquired in the Bachelor’s degree and aims to lead to independent research. The main focus of the Master's is therefore on the ability to grasp complex facts, to examine them critically, to reflect them in connection with other facts and to present them in accordance with the specific requirements of a scientific argument. In the specialisation German Literary Studies, text is the focus of interest as the basic format of all media. The students deal with the tradition and diversification of literary culture, the background of which is the media evolution from the Middle Ages to the present. In addition to the social relevance of literature, cultural and media research, it is also about the intensive examination of advanced methods, theories and techniques. In the specialisation German linguistics, students acquire in-depth knowledge of the language system of contemporary German and its historical development, and familiarise themselves with current research issues. The focus of research is on language history, language theory, language use and language comparison, for which students are prepared in theoretical and empirical terms.
