Annotation

Public speaking, that is, strategic communication, is omnipresent in the media, business and politics. The Seminar for General Public Speaking trains experts in strategic communication and explores public speaking phenomena on a scientific level. By combining theoretical and practical training, a degree in rhetoric provides the opportunity to succeed in a variety of professional fields: whether for journalism or management consultancy, science or as a rhetoric teacher, rhetoric graduates are ideally prepared for everyday working life thanks to their versatile skills. The degree course of general public speaking at the University of Tübingen serves the theoretical as well as practical education of the students. The most important topics of the course include: History and Theory of Rhetoric: Students become familiar with the classical and modern systems of rhetoric in their various historical forms and develop the ability to analyse and interpret communicative problems using the tools of rhetoric -text analysis and text interpretation: Students analyse not only speeches and conversations, but also literary works, radio plays, films or television productions. In this way, they are enabled to understand and evaluate all linguistic expressions depending on their conditions of origin and their intended effects. Applied Rhetoric: In practical seminars, students learn to express themselves effectively and appropriately. Rhetorical skills are taught for a wide variety of media: free speech and rhetoric of conversation are as much a part of the programme as writing literary texts or conceiving and realising radio reports and television films
