Central subject areas of the course are questions regarding language contact and language variation, linguistic integration and its associated problems, such as the parallel existence of German and Turkish or Russian in Germany, French and Arabic variations in France, and how these may continue to be created to a large extent within the framework of EU expansion. In contrast to the majority of other general linguistics degree courses, which as a rule have no specific geography-related focus and which make the study of non-Indo-European languages compulsory, the Master's degree course in Osnabrück focuses on European languages and cultural regions. This does not mean, however, that the study of certain non-European language and cultural areas is automatically excluded. In this way, a series of phenomena (such as the development of English and Spanish in America or the conflicting area of French and English in Canada) provide important and interesting perspectives and conclusions for studies focusing on a European (migration) specialisation. With regard to the intended inclusion of migrant languages, the study of a potential contact language is also planned, which can be obtained or optimised at the Language Centre of the Universität Osnabrück. With its focus on the linguistic aspects of migration and integration in Europe, the course builds on the Osnabrück profile element in migration research. The structure, variation and change of language and languages, especially under the conditions of language contact, are also examined with regard to relevant principles in Cognition Theory, resulting in 'Language and Cognition' being a further specialisation in addition to 'Migration and Integration in Europe'. The Master's degree opens up the opportunity to do a doctorate and, with the appropriate course planning/fulfilment of the relevant requirements, admission to any possible doctorate\\\; In accordance with this for the PhD programme on Migration Research and Intercultural Studies at the Universität Osnabrück. Furthermore, the degree qualifies students for the professional fields of education, especially adult education, communication, translation, editing, research and documentation, administration and politics as well as areas of art and culture. Opportunities for application can also be found in the development and implementation of integration programmes in particular.

Bachelor's or equivalent degree in General Linguistics, English Studies, German Studies, Cognitive Science, Latin Philology, Romance Studies or another Philology, or in a closely related subject with a relevant academic component comprising at least 70 credit points\; proof of a command of two foreign languages at level B2 according to the CEFR for the first foreign language and B1 for the second foreign language.
