Target group
Graduates of the Master's degree course Egyptology/Ancient Oriental Studies have acquired in-depth specialised knowledge of the early forms of Egyptian and Near Eastern Culture. They have the ability to carry out independent research and have knowledge of the philological, archaeological and cultural studies methods that are required for this. They master professional presentation techniques and have appropriate verbal and writing skills. The Master's degree Egyptology/Ancient Oriental Studies therefore paves the way for a career in academia, especially in research and teaching at universities and academies, as well as for careers in the museum sector in the processing and presentation of original objects. This degree also qualifies graduates to take on challenging roles in the general cultural sector, such as in adult education, public relations, journalism or publishing. A particularly highly qualified Master's degree in the course Egyptology/Ancient Oriental Studies also provides the opportunity of a doctorate in Egyptology, Near Eastern Archaeology or Ancient Eastern Philology.
Annotation
Commencement of studies in winter semester recommended. If the Bachelor degree certificate is not available by the application deadline, but at least 135 credit points can be demonstrated: Submit a certificate of study and examinations and the average grade achieved so far. (This certificate must be issued by the relevant higher education, original or officially authenticated copy). After enrolment, the diploma must be submitted. If the degree was obtained abroad: officially authenticated copy of a certificate of recognition (responsible: Student Service - Admission International).
Admission requirements
Evidence of a Bachelor's degree in the core subject "Egyptology/Ancient Oriental Studies" or the Bachelor's degree course "Archaeology" specialising in Near Eastern Archaeology at the University of Mainz or an equivalent degree at a university in Germany or abroad. Study relevant language skills of the B.A. course in “Egyptology/Ancient Oriental Studies” may need to be acquired during the Master’s degree course in the context of the module M8MA or M8Mb. Sufficient proficiency in English and French that enable the student to read specialist literature in the English and French languages and to participate in courses conducted in English. Student advice and counselling with the subject representatives before commencement of the study programme. International applicants from non-German-speaking countries must provide evidence of German proficiency at the level of the “German Language Test for Admission to Higher Education for Foreign Students” (DSH).
