The subject 'Philosophy' can be selected as a core or a minor in the two-subject Bachelor of Arts course (core subject / minor subject). The teaching qualification Philosophy can only be studied in combination with the subject French/Lettres modernes in the German-French degree course. (see also ). Prospective students can familiarise themselves with the subject during a taster day (www.studium.uni-mainz.de/schnuppertage).

Admission requirements

A requirement for admission is the proof of knowledge of French with at least five years of completed school education and a minimum grade of 'Sufficient' or 5 points, or a certificate demonstrating advanced knowledge of French equivalent to B2 level within the Common European Framework of Reference, proven by a language test or the Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française (DELF B2). Proof of knowledge of French can also be provided by submission of a higher education entrance qualification completed at a French-speaking school or an AbiBac (simultaneous acquisition of the general higher education entrance qualification ['Abitur'], and French baccalauréat ['Bac']). Students are required to have sufficient active and passive command of an additional foreign language to enable them to read specialist literature (for additional requirements, see examination regulations at www.uni-mainz.de/studlehr/ordnungen). It should be noted that sufficient knowledge of Ancient Greek or Latin is required on selection of a historical specialisation in the Master's degree course in Philosophy. Students are given the opportunity to (partially) acquire these and other language skills in the module Additional Qualifications/General Studies.
