DAAD Scholarshipholder Meeting Kigali Rwanda 2025

Dear collegues of the AIMS network,

We are happy to share our latest edition of the DAAD-AIMS newsletter, providing updates on recent activities, research achivements and events within our network.

In our latest edition of our Newsletter HEC-AIMS 2025/1 you will find highlights from our event: STAYING CONNECTED - DAAD Scholarshipholder Meeting in Kigali which was held in February 2025.

Additionaly we included planned activities like workshops, conferences, etc. in 2025 which will be held by in Rwanda, Germany and South Africa.

Moreover we share some interesting reports about a conference visit from our PhD scholarship holder Donald Kougang Yombi at the ICLR Singapor and a research visit from a delegation of the Institute of Mathematics of the Justus Liebig University at AIMS Rwanda.

We hope you enjoy reading and we wish you continued success within your project work!

  • Justus-Liebig University Gießen and AIMS Rwanda: Research Visit in Kigali

Research Visit in Kigali - Justus Liebig University Giessen at AIMS Rwanda

From 24 February to 7 March 2025, a delegation of five people from the Institute of Mathematics at Justus-Liebig University Gießen visited the AIMS Rwanda in Kigali. The group comprised Professors Matthias Meiners and Ludger Overbeck, Senior Lecturer Gerrit Eichner, and PhD students Maren Dück and Boris Günther.

They were welcomed by Professor Jan Hązła, Humboldt Research Chair at AIMS Rwanda, together with his DAAD-supported team of young researchers: PhD students Donald Kougang Yombi and Abdou Majeed Alidou and postdoctoral fellow Olakunle Abawonse.

The visit was made possible by funding from the DAAD as part of the “Combinatorics and Discrete Probability Theory in Africa” partnership.

The mornings were devoted to a reading seminar on selected chapters of Markov Chains and Stochastic Stability by Sean P. Meyn and Richard L. Tweedie.

Working side by side, participants refreshed their understanding of key concepts in modern Markov process theory and discussed how such tools can be applied in future projects and in topics that rely on advanced mathematical modelling. Afternoon sessions featured short presentations by the PhD students and postdoc on topics ranging from combinatorics to stochastic analysis. Senior researchers offered guidance on potential intersections and collaborations, while discussions also explored the possibility of teaching engagements in Kigali. This format encouraged open questions and informal chalk-talks that continued after class, giving everyone a clearer picture of current research directions on both sides.

    Research Visit Kigali

Life on campus, filled with shared meals and evening walks through Kigali’s lively neighbourhoods, offered an engaging insight into Rwandan academic life. Working together for two weeks immersed the early-career scientists in an international research environment, honing their presentation skills and broadening their professional networks. This enhanced their ability to communicate complex ideas across cultures.

The Gießen delegation would like to thank the AIMS Rwanda staff for their warm hospitality. Both the Gießen team and Jan and his research group would also like to express their gratitude to the DAAD for enabling a visit that strengthened individual expertise, expanded international research links, and paved the way for ongoing joint teaching and research between Gießen and Kigali.
