Newsletter HEC-AIMS 2024/25

Dear AIMS Network Colleagues,
We are pleased to present the 7th edition of the DAAD-AIMS newsletter, highlighting recent activities and research achievements across our network.
This edition features an inspiring interview with Michel Murwanashyaka, a current DAAD-AIMS scholarshipholder, who shares valuable insights and experiences from his journey within the program.
We are also excited to showcase the fruitful collaborations between AIMS Rwanda and the University of Ilmenau, AIMS Senegal and the University of Bielefeld, as well as AIMS Rwanda and Goethe University. These partnerships have led to significant research activities and workshops, reflecting the strength of our collective efforts.
Additionally, we proudly present a selection of publications from both current and former project partners and scholarship recipients, further emphasizing the success of these collaborations. This is truly encouraging!
Finally, preparations are underway for the "Getting Connected" Scholarshipholders' Meeting in Kigali, which will take place from 24 to 25 February 2025. We are excited about this upcoming opportunity to connect with our scholarship holders and engage in meaningful discussions. We eagerly look forward to welcoming the scholarship holders in Rwanda soon.
Enjoy reading, stay connected, and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a successful New Year!

Interview with Michel Murwanashyaka

Q: If you had to describe AIMS with one word, what would it be? And what word comes to mind for TU Ilmenau?
A: AIMS: Opportunity, TU Ilmenau: Innovation
Q: What motivated you to apply for the DAAD scholarship at AIMS, and how did you hear about it?
A: I was motivated to apply for the AIMS program because of its mission to promote mathematical excellence and innovative problem-solving in Africa. The program’s interdisciplinary approach, combined with opportunities for collaboration with international researchers, aligned perfectly with my academic and career goals. I first heard about AIMS through colleagues and alumni at online platforms, where their inspiring stories and achievements sparked my interest.
Q: How has your experience been living in Germany during your research visit/visits at TU Ilmenau?
A: Living in Germany during my research visits at TU Ilmenau has been both rewarding and transformative. The university offers a vibrant research environment with access to excellent resources, which has greatly enhanced my academic work. Outside the lab, engaging with German culture, meeting people from diverse backgrounds, and learning the language have enriched my personal experience. While adapting to a new environment had its challenges, the support from both TU Ilmenau and DAAD made the transition smooth and fulfilling.
Q: Can you elaborate on the research activities you’ve been involved in since joining AIMS?
A: Since joining AIMS, I have engaged in various research projects that utilise mathematical modelling and computer vision. I worked on the Mathematical Modelling of Hepatitis B Virus Transmission Dynamics, focusing on vaccination and treatment strategies. Additionally, I contributed to projects such as Cassava Disease Classification Using Computer Vision and Detecting and Monitoring Small Objects from Aerial Images, enhancing environmental monitoring capabilities. Currently, I am pursuing a PhD project titled Intelligent Predictive Control and Smart Monitoring for Water Distribution Network Systems, aimed at improving water management efficiency.
Q: As a current scholarship holder, what advice would you give to prospective students considering applying for the AIMS program and the DAAD scholarship?
A: I advise prospective students to fully embrace the opportunities provided by the AIMS program, including academic training and networking events. Persistence, curiosity, and collaboration are crucial for maximising the benefits of both the AIMS experience and the DAAD scholarship. Engaging actively with peers and mentors can open doors to invaluable experiences. Ultimately, these qualities will help you make the most of your time at AIMS and in Germany.
Q: Dear Michel, thank you very much! We wish you all the best for the future!
