Freiburg University of Education (PH Freiburg) - "HOLA"

PH Freiburg’s HOLA project ("University Certificate for Teachers with Foreign University Degrees – Linguistic, Didactic, Methodological and Transcultural Skills for the Teaching Profession") aims to integrate teachers trained abroad into the German school system and the labour market. In order to cushion the high language demands placed on the participants, the immigrant teachers are intensively supported with language courses and advice before, during and after their follow-up studies at the university. In doing so, they are also prepared to use the potential of their own multilingualism and interculturality for language-sensitive teaching.

The HOLA university certificate is a PH Freiburg project that responds to the shortage of teachers in Baden-Württemberg, the declining number of students in teacher training courses and an increasingly heterogeneous student body. The aim of the project is to integrate teachers with qualifications acquired abroad into the German school system and the labour market.

However, the high communicative demands of the teaching profession represent a major hurdle for new immigrants without sufficient knowledge of German or with a foreign educational qualification. The university certificate responds to this by offering an intensive language course prior to the post-study course as well as general and professional language-oriented courses during the course of study.

The participants are supported during their (post-)studies at the PH and during the adaptation period at a school in order to receive full professional recognition for the teaching profession in Baden-Württemberg. They also acquire additional qualifications within the framework of HOLA that prepare them for teaching in linguistically heterogeneous classes. They are instructed to draw on and use their resources with regard to multilingualism and knowledge of other socio-cultural contexts. The HOLA framework also provides for the networking of those involved in the qualification of immigrant teachers as well as the teachers themselves.
