The programme offers top-level graduate students the opportunity to achieve a doctoral degree (PhD) in economics.

Major research fields

Generating Innovations:

  • Innovative behaviour and decision-making
  • Patterns and forms of innovative activities

Effects of Innovative Change:

  • Allocative and distributive effects
  • Political and institutional dimensions

Dynamics and Patterns of Innovative Change:

  • Economic and innovative dynamics of sectoral structures
  • Innovative change, increasing product variety and demand

Methodological extensions are part of this programme.

Course organisation

The programme is intended to be completed in three years. During the first year, students improve their basic theoretical knowledge and methodological skills by attending PhD-level courses. In the second year, students concentrate on their essential research activities. The individual PhD projects are completed during the last year. The programme includes summer schools with lectures held by renowned international researchers.

Doctoral candidates at Friedrich Schiller University Jena have the possibility to enrol. Enrolment is not compulsory, but it offers a whole range of advantages.
Semester fee (student services and student self-government) including semester ticket for free use of public transport: 237.60 EUR per semester and a one-off fee of 20 EUR for a multifunctional student ID card called a "Thoska" (as of May 2023, subject to change)

Costs of living

Academic admission requirements

To apply for this programme, you must hold either a "Diplom" or an MA/MSc in Economics or Business (incl. Finance). Therefore, you should have finished your MA before you apply. A Bachelor's degree or a diploma from a university of applied sciences does not meet the requirements for this programme.

Language requirements

Fluent written and spoken English is required. As an orientation, language level C1 or higher of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is recommended. Proof of formal language knowledge is not necessary. Language proficiency will be judged in your application and subsequent interviews.
