The artists' residence Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems awards three- and nine-month residential scholarships to fine artists from Germany and abroad whose artistic work bears a clear relation to the motto of the respective round of applications.

Programme description

Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems, founded in 1995, is a place of reflection, discussion, artistic production and encounter. The Künstlerhaus supports fine artists from around the world by awarding a total of six residential scholarships per year. Schloss Balmoral sees itself as an interface between creative work and theoretical reflection and as a mediator between former and current scholarship holders. The scholarship holders' works are regularly presented in the exhibition space of the Künstlerhaus in the city centre of Bad Ems.

Target group

National and international fine artists who have completed an arts degree (Master's or equal) and subsequently worked as an artist for three years prior to taking up their scholarship. Applications from autodidacts who have demonstrably produced outstanding artistic work are accepted in exceptional cases. Applicants' artistic work must focus on a particular genre or a certain topic specified for each round of applications.

A curatorial post that comes with a nine-month residential scholarship is also awarded each year.

Scholarship benefits

The scholarship includes a grant of 1,400 EUR per month, a furnished bed-/living room with bathroom, and a studio. A lounge, dining room and kitchen are available for communal use. Two of the scholarships are awarded for three months and four for nine months.

Formalities

The jurors select the scholarship holders based on submitted work samples which are reviewed by a specialist jury focusing in particular on the work's potential for development.
