Programme Description
The Herder Institute awards scholarships to junior or professorial-level researchers especially from East-Central and Western Europe (excluding Germany) who work on the history of Eastern Europe. Visiting scholars benefit from the Herder Institute's comprehensive collections (image archive, map- and document collection) and from one of the world’s biggest special libraries on the history of East-Central Europe during their research stay in the city of Marburg.
The sponsorship will be granted for a period of three months at most. It is worth a base amount of EUR 1,400 for Format 1 and of EUR 1,600 for Format 2-researchers; moreover, there are contributions towards health insurance, non-personnel costs and travel expenses.
Target Group
advanced Master's students, doctoral candidates, researchers of post-doctoral (Format 1) or professorial level (Format 2) mainly from East-Central European countries and Western Europe (excluding Germany) doing research on East-Central European history

about 30 scholarships each year
Duration
up to one month (Format 1) or up to three months with an option for the funding of a workshop (Format 2)
Scholarship Value
- monthly base amount of EUR 1,400 (Format 1) and of EUR 1,600 (Format 2), the optional workshop of Format 2 will be funded with up to EUR 5,000
- contribution towards health insurance: maximum of EUR 35 per month for non-EU citizens
- allowance for non-personnel costs: EUR 50 per month
- reimbursement of travel expenses (second class rail fare)

Application Deadline
For placements between January and June, applications must be submitted by 30 June of the year before the placement. For placements between July and December, the deadline for applications is 31 December of the year prior to the placement.
