The Foundation, which maintains close ties with the German Green Party, awards scholarships for German and international doctoral candidates from any discipline. Candidates are tomorrow's experts and leaders. They come from any country and approve of green values. They are prepared to take responsibility and advocate the green Foundation's ideals in an international context: the concepts of sustainability, self-determination, equal opportunities and justice as well as the encouragement of human rights and the promotion of a democratic culture.
Every year about 200 new scholars are accepted into the Programme. To be admitted candidates propose a convincing, ambitious and innovative research project. The Programme furthermore offers, among others, trainings and seminars geared to real-world needs on topics such as science communication, event planning, publication strategies or higher-education didactics.
particularly gifted German and international doctoral candidates from any discipline completing promising doctoral dissertations at a German higher-education institution showing excellent promise for future academic and professional careers. Moreover, applicants show involvement in line with the values of green policy.

The standard funding period is of two years; in addition, application for renewal is possible twice for six months at a time.

- social engagement and interest in politics
- (self)-reflective, goal-oriented, creative personalities in their own right with inter-cultural and gender-democratic competences
- identification with the goals of the HBS
- responsible, motivated, reliable individuals willing to play an active role in the Foundation's work
