Programme Description

The PhD scholarships support highly qualified junior academics from the historical sciences with excellent academic standing and brilliant examination results who show unusual promise for their doctoral theses. Applications can be submitted at any time, independent of the candidate's nationality or place of work. Scholarship holders receive a monthly base amount of EUR 1,400. There are additional benefits, such as allowances for accompanying children or, i.e., to cover printing costs, if necessary. Please note that income from employment and scholarship income are mutually exclusive. The funding will be awarded over a period of two years.

Target Group

highly-qualified, particularly gifted junior academics from the historical sciences with excellent academic standing and brilliant examination results who show unusual promise for their doctoral theses

Research projects in the following subject areas are given funding priority:

  • archaeology
  • historical sciences
  • historical islamic studies
  • history of art
  • history of law
  • prehistory and early history
  • history of science

Academic Requirements

admission to doctoral studies. The overall master grade awarded must be at least 1.5 or above in Germany (comparable with grade A in other countries). For candidates with a foreign degree, a special examination for inclusion in the selection process will be performed in the Foundation's office. The final grade achieved in legal exams also will likewise be assessed separately.

Number of Scholarships

About 13.5% of the applicants are awarded scholarships.

Duration

two years with the option to extend the funding, if the scholar becomes a parent during the allowance period and is therefore entitled to maternity and/or parental leave

Scholarship Value

  • scholarship base amount: EUR 1,400 per month
  • standard foreign residence allowance: EUR 350 per month
  • travel allowance: as required
  • material costs: as required
  • contribution to printing costs, if necessary
  • child allowance, if applicable: EUR 300 for scholars with one child, EUR 400 for two children, EUR 500 for three or more children

Income from employment and scholarship income are mutually exclusive.

Applications may be submitted at any time.

Application Requirements

  • Only applicants who were under 28 years of age when awarded the degree qualifying them for a doctorate are eligible.
  • Final grade for the degree (Master's, for state examinations: Sec. II) must be 1.5 or higher. For degrees gained abroad a separate evaluation will take place to assess the applicant's suitability. The final grade for state examinations in law is also evaluated separately.
  • The foundation does not award PhD completion grants: follow-up funding of sponsorships by a third party with a grant period of over 1 year or grants covering a period of less than one year will be considered completion grants.
