Every year the Studienwerk funds scholarships and a wide range of educational programmes for about 200 German and foreign doctoral candidates of protestant faith from all disciplines. The grants are awarded in accordance with the guidelines by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research on the basis of the candidate's income and personal situation. Full sponsorship for students enrolled at a German higher-education institution is presently worth EUR 1,350 every month. Doctoral students receive an additional allowance towards research costs of EUR 100.

Scholarships are initially awarded for a period of two years, extension of the funding period of up to three years at most is possible.
A full grant currently amounts to 1,350 EUR. Doctoral candidates moreover receive a research allowance of 100 EUR. If there are children under the age of 12 living with the doctoral candidate for whom the candidate is the legal guardian, the scholar is eligible for a child care allowance or support for a parental year.

There are two application deadlines every year: 1 December and 1 June.
- Applicants must be of protestant faith (exceptions in justified cases only).
- degree completed in good time
- above-average academic study and examination achievements (final grade of at least 'good', in law 'fully satisfactory')
- degree enabling access to doctoral studies
- Students from abroad can apply if they are admitted for a doctorate at an institution of higher education in Germany.
