„DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships“ is a programme implemented by the 'German Aerospace Center' (DLR) and the 'German Academic Exchange Service' (DAAD). DLR is Germany´s national research center for aeronautics and space. Its extensive research and development work in Aeronautics, Space, Transportation and Energy is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. As Germany´s space agency, DLR has been given responsibility for the forward planning and the implementation of the German space program by the German federal government as well as for the international representation of German interests. Approximately 7,400 people are employed in DLR´s 33 institutes and facilities at 16 locations in Germany.

Who can apply?
This special programme is intended for highly-qualified foreign doctoral and postdoctoral students as well as senior scientists. DLR-DAAD Fellowships are defined and awarded on an individual basis. Each fellowship announcement will indicate the specific qualification requirements and terms of visit.

What can be funded?
The current offers are published under DLR-DAAD Fellowships - Current offers on the homepages of the DAAD and the DLR in the research fields:

Please note that within the DLR-DAAD programme, you can apply only for a DLR institute, not for a university or any other institution.

Duration of the funding

  • Type A - Doctoral Students: 36 months
  • Type B - Postdoctoral Students: 6 to 24 months
  • Type C - Senior Scientists: 1 to 3 months

Value

  • Doctoral Students (Doctorate in Germany): monthly instalment of 1,365 Euros (plus allowance for materials of 102 Euros); e.g. flat-rate travel allowance, health insurance, family allowances
  • Postdoctoral Students (Research in Germany): 2,000 Euros per month
  • Senior Scientists (Research in Germany): 2,300 Euros per month

What requirements must be met?
At the time of their application, applicants for a DLR-DAAD Fellowship must

  • be able to prove their outstanding study or research achievements,
  • Type A: have completed their studies or research with a university degree in the last six years,
  • Type B: have completed their studies with a PhD in the last two years,
  • Type C: applicants must be working in higher education or at a research institute; positions are open to outstandingly-qualified academics and scientists who should generally hold a doctorate/ Ph.D.,
  • have to submit an appropriate language certificate (e.g. TOEFL CBT 213-240; TOEFL IBT 79-95, IELTS 6.5-7.0, CAE, C1),
  • not be of German nationality.

Language skills
Applicants should have an excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of German is advantageous.

Application documents
The application procedure occurs online through the DAAD portal. Your referees should send their letters of recommendation by post to the application address.

Certificates, proof of credits, certifications and translations may be scanned in non-certified form and uploaded to the DAAD portal. DAAD's Head Office in Bonn will only request certified copies of the submitted documents in paper form if a grant is awarded!

1. Documents to be uploaded to the DAAD portal
Type A and Type B:

  • Online application form
  • Cover page
  • Statement of the reasons for applying for a certain Fellowship: Appendix
  • Complete curriculum vitae;
  • List of publications, if applicable;
  • Abstract of the final Master or PhD thesis (max. 3 pages);
  • University degree certificate indicating final grade(s): the certificate must be subsequently submitted before the grant-supported research begins if it is not available at the time of application
  • English language certificate giving evidence of the applicant's Level of proficiency (e.g. TOEFL CBT 213-240; TOEFL IBT 79-95, IELTS 6.5-7.0, CAE, C1)
  • German or English translation of documents submitted in the national language
  • All university certificates on all annual examinations with individual grade(s), incl. explanation of grading system

2. To be submitted by post to the application address
  • Two recent references from senior academics who provide information about your quailfications. Please regard the instructions given on the tab „Submitting an application“.
Applicants are not required to submit any confirmation of academic supervision.

Type C

Important notice for all applicants:
Within the DLR-DAAD programme, you can apply only for a DLR institute, not for a university or any other institution.

By applying for a Fellowship within the 'DLR-DAAD Research Fellowhips' Programme you give your consent to the DAAD to forward your documents and your personal details to DLR and its relevant institutions. The DAAD and the DLR will not pass on your details to third parties.

General information on the application via DAAD portal
You can access the DAAD portal by clicking "Application portal" at the end of the page. Here you will find an online application form in which you can enter your application data.

This is what you have to do:

1. Register in the DAAD portal (Read notes about registering in the portal >>)

2. Request references (if necessary according to the call for proposals, see "Application procedure")
The form, which has to be completed by a referee, has to be generated in the DAAD portal in the section "Request reference" after registration and downloaded. Please send the form by e-mail to your referee and ask for the completed reference form to be returned to you in a sealed envelope. In each case, please provide your referee with the application address thus enabling him/her to send the recommendation letter there direct.

Please note that the form for completion by a referee can only be generated during the application period (from about 6 weeks before the application deadline).
Please generate one form for each referee.


3. Applying online in the DAAD portal (Read notes on applying in the portal >>)

  • Download and complete the online application form
  • Prepare application documents
  • If necessary, translate documents (unless they are already in German or English).
  • Scan paper documents (except references) and save in PDF format. Please note that you can only upload PDF files to the portal.
  • Upload the completed application form and the required appendices (except references and any work samples which you might have to submit) to the portal in PDF format. Translations, if applicable, should be uploaded together with the document issued in the original language.
  • Submit the uploaded application documents online.

4. Sending application documents by post
Submit the printed "Application summary" – if necessary with several copies (see "Application procedure/Application documents") by post. Please do not enclose any other documents that have not been uploaded to the portal with the printed "Application summary" – except the required references (in sealed envelopes) and a work sample if applicable!
Information for applicants from non-EU countries:
Please remember to specify the exact contents of your postal consignment in the documents for the customs authorities, e.g. "Application for a scholarship with application documents, a reference and a DVD with work samples (no commercial goods)".
