Programme Description
Over a period of five to eight years, the Foundation supports outstanding young scientists to work independently, enabling them to pursue and establish new and interdisciplinary lines of research at a higher-education institution of their choice in Germany. Highly-qualified young scientists from all subjects who have been awarded their doctorates within four (for W1 professorships) or seven years (for W2 professorships) prior to the application and who have already gathered international experience are offered a tenure track option. For the period following the funding and upon a positive evaluation, the universities commit to assuming the successful professorship and guarantee that a regular professorship will be included in their budget.

Up to seven professorships are awarded per call, depending on the outcome of the evaluation. Initial funding over a period of five years is available in an amount of EUR 0.8 to 1.5 million per professorship, in accordance with the specific requirements of the respective field and the applicant's individual qualifications. Upon a positive evaluation the Foundation can approve up to three years of continuing degressive funding or the professorship can be continued as an endowed chair (W3 professorship).

The funding is geared to researchers from any discipline or nationality who wish to work at a higher-education institution in Germany: W1 professorships are primarily supported, but also W2 professorships are financed, preferably for returnees or applicants from abroad.
