In-Region Scholarships for Postgraduate Studies for Students from Yemen in Jordan • DAAD

Objective
The programme aims at fostering strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Jordan with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development. To this end, scholarships are granted for development-related Master studies for individuals who plan to pursue a career in teaching and/or research at a higher education institution in Yemen.
By training future academic and professional leaders, the programme contributes to the following long-term impacts:
- Qualified professionals’ involvement in the solution of development-related problems in Yemen
- Graduates strengthening education and research in Yemen
- Structural strengthening and regional networking of partner institutions and partner universities
To achieve these long-term impacts, the following outcomes have been formulated as programme objectives:
Programme objective 1: Graduates have qualified to take over responsible positions in their, or for their, region of origin.
Programme objective 2: The participation of women and underprivileged groups is reinforced.
Programme objective 3: Organizational, financial and personal capacities of partner institutions are strengthened.
As part of the "In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme“, DAAD offers scholarships for Master studies. The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and aims at university staff in the first line, without neglecting the public sector demand of academically trained personnel.
Who can apply?
The target group are graduates from Yemen with a first academic degree who want to pursue Master’s courses (Thesis Track) in Jordan.
What can be funded?
The In-Region Scholarship Programme supports full-time studies in subject areas with strong relevance to national development.
The scholarships at the two selected Jordanian universities are available in the following fields of graduate programmes:

Please note the following DAAD’s language requirements regarding the above-mentioned study programmes:
* IELTS at least 6.5 and TOEFL (IBT) at least 90 (TOEFL home edition or IELTS indicator (online test) are also accepted)
** IELTS at least 5.5 and TOEFL (IBT) at least 69 (TOEFL home edition or IELTS indicator (online test) are also accepted)
Duration of the funding
The duration of the Master programme is generally two years and is usually starting in September of the following year.
Please note that the maximum duration of the scholarship is based on the time that is left until the scholarship holder has reached the regular period of studies in that programme; i.e., if you apply for a DAAD scholarship starting in your second year of studies of a two-year programme, the maximum duration of the scholarship will be one year.
The standard period of study and the start date are based on the agreement between the host university and the DAAD.
Value
The scholarship covers:
- Tuition fees (Master Thesis Track)*** per semester
- Monthly scholarship payment: 570 EUR
- Travel allowance at the beginning and the end of your scholarship (proof of arrival must be provided): 530 EUR
- Study and Research allowance: 460 EUR
- Printing allowance: 400 EUR
- Monthly family allowances for spouses (upon request): 228 EUR
The DAAD will endeavour to transfer the first monthly payment to your bank account as quickly as possible after the beginning of your scholarship. Processing the first transfer of funds may take some time.
Payments generally cannot be made prior of the scholarship start date and the commencement of studies at the host institution. Furthermore, no additional benefits that are not listed in this call for applications can be granted.
Selection
All applicants apply via the DAAD online portal not later than the deadline.
After formal evaluation of the DAAD regarding the completeness and correctness of the applications, an independent selection committee will evaluate the formally correct applications. The DAAD reserves the right of final selection.
Further information
DAAD In-Region scholarship holders are also
a) encouraged to apply for a short-term research stay in Germany for 2 up to 6 months.
Please note:
- The short-term research stay in Germany should preferably be announced in the application for the regular scholarship and can only be awarded if the necessary financial means are available.
- If you would like to apply, please note that the funding period for a short-term research stay in Germany is part of the In-Region programme and the regular study period of the programme may not be exceeded by the short-term research stay in Germany, this must be included in the regular study period of the In-Region programme.

b) invited to apply for different Summer Schools in Germany (four weeks).
All further details regarding additional benefits and the additional application processes will be provided after admission to the scholarship programme.
Application requirements
What requirements must be met?
Applicants
- have successfully completed generally an at least three-year university degree (i.e. Bachelor degree or equivalent) with excellent results (at least: Second Class/Upper Division or equivalent, if applicable),
- clearly show motivation and strong commitment have thorough knowledge of the language of instruction (English and/or Arabic),
- have generally completed their last university degree not more than six years ago at the time of application,
- must be nationals or permanent residents of Yemen since at least five years,
- should generally be
a) staff member of a public university,
b) candidate considered for teaching or research staff recruitment and/or
c) from the public sector.
Female applicants, refugees with recognised refugee status and candidates from other less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the programme.
Scholarships are initially granted for one year and can be extended to a maximum of the regular period of study upon receipt of an application for extension. Scholars must demonstrate satisfactory progress before an extension is granted.
Language skills
- Please refer to the point “What can be funded?” in the tab "Overview" and check the DAAD’s language requirements according to your desired study programme (marked with one or two asterisks):

The test should have been taken no longer than two years before the application deadline. - Candidates who wish to apply at a Jordanian university should be aware that they might have to take an English language test a second time in Jordan because Jordanian universities do not accept all foreign language tests. The Jordanian universities only accept tests of TOEFL Ibt at Amideast and IELTS at British Council which usually must be taken in Jordan. Please check the homepage of the university of your choice to find out the specific language requirements.

Application documents
Mandatory documents to be submitted in English for the DAAD scholarship application via the DAAD online portal:
- DAAD application form (available in the DAAD-Portal)
- Identification document (i.e. passport or ID card); if your nationality is not Yemeni, please submit a proof of residency in
Yemen for the last five years (to be submitted via “Miscellaneous”) - Curriculum vitae in tabular form (max. 3 pages)
- Letter of motivation (1 to 3 pages)
- Information about your preferred master programmes
- Letter of admission for the host university (this can be subsequently submitted before the scholarship begins, if it is not available at the time of application)
- Certified copies of university degree certificates including transcripts (the final certificate must be submitted as soon as possible and before the start of the scholarship at the latest, if it is not available at the time of application; transcripts must be submitted until the application deadline)
- School-leaving certificate which entitled holders to study at a university in their home country, including all individual grades)
- Semester schedule (if applicable, please add the information how and when a planned research stay in Germany would fit into the semester schedule)
- Proof of English language abilities; please refer to the point “What can be funded?” in the tab "Overview" and check the language requirements according to your desired study programme (marked with one or two asterisks):

- Additional documents that might be relevant for your application (e.g. proof of internships, proof of employment)
- List of publications (max. 10 pages)
Important information regarding your application:
- Your application is only valid if you submit all the required documents to the DAAD portal on time. Incomplete or incorrect applications cannot be considered. You are responsible for ensuring that your applications are complete.
- Certificates, proof of credits, certifications and translations may be scanned in non-certified form and uploaded to the DAAD portal. The DAAD reserves the right to request certified copies of the documents.
- If you do not have documents such as recommendation letter and/or letter of admission at the time of application, please mention and explain this at an appropriate place in the application.
- Please note that the scholarship only becomes effective as soon as the admission letter from the university is issued. This must be submitted to the DAAD Portal as soon as possible and is part of a complete application (this can be subsequently submitted before the scholarship begins if it is not available before).

Applications submitted through other channels or to other authorities will not be considered.
Please note
- Your application is only valid if you submit all the required documents to the DAAD portal on time.
- For submitting references by post, the postmark date serves as proof that they have been dispatched on time.
- The DAAD portal closes at 24.00 hrs. Central European (Summer) Time (CET or CEST) on the last application day.
- The application documents remain with the DAAD. Data relating to applicants is saved by the DAAD in accordance with the Federal Data Protection Act and with the EU Data Protection Regulation insofar as this data is needed to process the application.

Submitting an application
General information on the application via DAAD portal
You can access the DAAD portal by clicking "Application portal" at the end of the page. Here you will find an online application form in which you can enter your application data.
This is what you have to do:
1. Register in the DAAD portal (Read notes about registering in the portal >>)
2. Applying online in the DAAD portal (Read notes on applying in the portal >>)
- Download and complete the online application form
- Prepare application documents
- If necessary, translate documents (unless they are already in German or English).
- Scan paper documents (except references) and save in PDF format. Please note that you can only upload PDF files to the portal.
- Upload the completed application form and the other application documents to the portal in PDF format. Translations, if applicable, should be uploaded together with the document issued in the original language.
- Submit the uploaded application documents online.
