Finding Scholarships

Here you can find information on various kinds of DAAD funding for foreign students, graduates and postdocs as well as on funding offered by other selected organisations.

The programme targets Indian students pursuing a degree in the fields of science and engineering who wish to do a research internship at a publicly-funded German higher education institution or a research institute.

Who can apply?

Students who wish to apply must meet the following criteria:

  1. They should belong to one of the selected Indian higher education institutions (list of institutions). The list of selected institutions is influenced by, but not limited to, the following factors: AICTE approval, NAAC accreditation, MHRD evaluation, INI (Institute of National Importance) status established before 2010 and availability of 4- and 5-year undergraduate and integrated Master’s degrees respectively.
  2. They should be enrolled in programmes which can be classified under the broad fields of engineering, mathematics and natural sciences.
  3. They should be in the 5th or 6th academic semester of a 4-year Bachelor’s programme or in their 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th academic semester of a 5-year integrated or dual degree (Bachelor-Master) programme.
  4. They should not be former recipients of the WISE scholarship.

What can be funded?

A research internship at a public or state-funded higher education institution or a non-university research institute in Germany to work under doctoral students, scientists or professors as a part of their ongoing research projects.

Duration of the funding

A 2 to 3 month research stay spanning between the months of May and August. Internships of less than 60 days and more than 90 days cannot be supported under the scheme of this programme.


Value

  • A monthly scholarship of 650 euros for undergraduate students (the monthly instalment will be calculated on a daily basis, i.e. 21.70 euros per day)
  • A lump sum travel subsidy of 525 euros
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance covered by DAAD

Selection

The review of applications and selection procedure is based upon academic achievements and overall evaluation of the applicant’s profile.
Results are generally announced by the beginning of February.

Further information

  1. The applicant must search independently for a German professor/guide, under whose supervision s/he could carry out her/his research. In the case of several offers, the applicant must select one internship.
  2. Internships at private universities, research institutes or companies are not eligible.
  3. Applicants must be of Indian nationality.
  4. The applicant should be in possession of a valid passport by 1st December. The name on the application form must be identical with the one in the passport.
  5. Selected candidates are not allowed to draw funding from other German scholarship-awarding organisations or from other German public authorities simultaneously with a DAAD scholarship.

What requirements must be met?

  1. The applicant must have an aggregate percentage of 85% and above or CGPA 8.5/10 and above of all completed semesters at the time of application. All transcripts of completed semesters must be submitted.
  2. The applicant must be a registered student of her/his institution. It is necessary to obtain a “No Objection Certificate” and a “Certificate of Enrolment” for the entire duration of the internship from the home institute. These forms are available under the category “Application Procedure” of the programme announcement.
  3. The applicant must possess an invitation letter from a German professor on the letter head of the German university or research institute. A completed “Approval Form” (see under "Application Procedure") from the German host is also mandatory. Both the documents must clearly mention the exact start and end dates of the internship.
  4. The applicant must submit a CV and a short research proposal along with the documents mentioned above.

Language skills

German language skills are not mandatory.
Very good proficiency of the English language is expected.

The application procedure occurs online through the DAAD portal. You are also required to send one copy of the "Application summary" (PDF file), which is generated in the DAAD portal after the online application procedure has been completed, and a reference from an Indian university teacher by post to the DAAD office New Delhi.
Please note that the first and last name filled in the application form should be identical to the name in the passport.
Please note that the access to the application portal only appears while the current application period is running. After the application deadline has expired, the portal for this programme is not available until the next application period.

The access to the DAAD portal opens about 6 weeks before the application deadline.

General information on the application via DAAD portal

You can access the DAAD portal by clicking "Application portal" at the end of the page. Here you will find an online application form in which you can enter your application data.

This is what you have to do:

1. Register in the DAAD portal (Read notes about registering in the portal >>)

2. Request references (if necessary according to the call for proposals, see "Application procedure")
The form, which has to be completed by a referee, has to be generated in the DAAD portal in the section "Request reference" after registration and downloaded. Please send the form by e-mail to your referee and ask for the completed reference form to be returned to you in a sealed envelope. In each case, please provide your referee with the application address thus enabling him/her to send the recommendation letter there direct.

Please note that the form for completion by a referee can only be generated during the application period (from about 6 weeks before the application deadline).
Please generate one form for each referee.

3. Applying online in the DAAD portal (Read notes on applying in the portal >>)

  • Download and complete the online application form
  • Prepare application documents
  • If necessary, translate documents (unless they are already in German or English).
  • Scan paper documents (except references) and save in PDF format. Please note that you can only upload PDF files to the portal.
  • Upload the completed application form and the required appendices (except references and any work samples which you might have to submit) to the portal in PDF format. Translations, if applicable, should be uploaded together with the document issued in the original language.
  • Submit the uploaded application documents online.

4. Sending application documents by post
Submit the printed "Application summary" – if necessary with several copies (see "Application procedure/Application documents") by post. Please do not enclose any other documents that have not been uploaded to the portal with the printed "Application summary" – except the required references (in sealed envelopes) and a work sample if applicable!
Information for applicants from non-EU countries:
Please remember to specify the exact contents of your postal consignment in the documents for the customs authorities, e.g. "Application for a scholarship with application documents, a reference and a DVD with work samples (no commercial goods)".
