Programme Description

Every year the Studienwerk funds scholarships and a wide range of educational programmes for about 300 German and foreign doctoral candidates of protestant faith from all disciplines. The grants are awarded in accordance with the guidelines by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Target Group

German and foreign nationals of protestant faith with excellent academic standing who wish to obtain or are already studying for a doctorate at a German higher-education institution
In well-founded cases, Germans can pursue their doctorate degree at a higher education institution in a member state of the European Union, in Great Britain, in Norway or in Switzerland.

An application is possible if the applicant has not worked on the project for more than a year.

Number of Scholarships

about 300 scholarships per year

Duration

Scholarships are initially awarded for a period of 2 years, an extension of the funding period for up to 3 years at most is possible.

Scholarship Value

A full grant currently amounts to 1,350 EUR. Doctoral candidates moreover receive a research allowance of 100 EUR. If there are children under the age of 14 living with the doctoral candidate for whom the candidate is the legal guardian, the candidate is eligible for a child care allowance or support for a parental year.

Application Deadline

There are 2 application deadlines every year: 1 December and 1 June.

Application Requirements

  • Applicants must be of protestant faith (exceptions in justified cases only).
  • degree completed in good time
  • above-average academic study and examination achievements (final grade of at least "good", in law "fully satisfactory")
  • degree enabling access to doctoral studies
  • admission to doctoral studies
  • Students from abroad can apply if they are admitted for a doctorate at a higher education institution in Germany.
  • German language skills at level B2/DSH (for non-native speaking candidates)
