With the Lichtenberg Professorships the Volkswagen Foundation has set itself the aim of sponsoring qualified young academics and thereby also offer institution of higher education a degree of planning reliability. The professorships sponsored by the foundation can be supported over a period of up to 8 years. If possible, the chairs should be taken over by the higher education institutions after that period of time. Approximately 10 professorships are sponsored with this programme. The target group are young, highly qualified academics. They should already have published outstanding and independent scientific papers after completing their doctorate. Decisive selection criteria include qualification of the applicant, the research topic, as well as the academic environment and integration in the institution of higher education. Each sponsored professorship is supported with 0.8 to 1.5 million EUR over the first 5 years. An evaluation takes place after that period of time and a decision on how to proceed further is made.
The core target groups are young academics who have completed their doctorates no more than four years ago. The funding initiative is also aimed at younger academics with an excellent record, who have completed a doctorate no more than seven years ago.
