Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists
Research grants to run for more than 6 months
  • Application deadline: 15 October each year
  • Parallel to the online application a complete hardcover set of the application documents has to be submitted to the application address.
  • Requirements: B.A./B.Sc. 2nd class upper division and M.A./M.Sc. Applicants from Francophone countries submit the Licence and Maitrise (mark: Assez-Bien), furthermore a DEA/DESS degree or Master according to the LMD system.
  • At the time of application, generally no more than six years should have passed since the applicant gained the last degree.
  • Applicants who at the time of application have been living in Germany more than 15 months cannot be considered.
  • Lawyers who wish to apply for a doctoral grant which requires a preceding LL.M. degree may also together with the application for a doctorate apply for a preceding LL.M. grant.
  • Intended field research phases have already to be mentioned with the application.
  • During the complete funding time a maximum of two field research phases in your home country (of altogether 12 months) is possible. During the field research phases the funding will be paid for a maximum of ten months.
  • This programme does not pay any research funding (assumption of the costs must be added to the application).
  • German language skills are not expected.
  • Please regard that the beginning of your grant can only be in April or October. As a rule, the grant is preceded by a 4 or 6 months lasting language course (selection date is once a year, generally at the end of January).

Grants in accordance with the DAAD Sandwich Model
  • Application deadline: 15 October each year
  • Parallel to the online application a complete hardcover set of the application documents has to be submitted to the application address.
  • Requirements: B.A./B.Sc. 2nd class upper division and M.A./M.Sc. Applicants from Francophone countries submit the Licence and Maitrise (mark: Assez-Bien), furthermore a DEA/DESS degree or Master according to the LMD system.
  • At the time of application, generally no more than six years should have passed since the applicant gained the last degree.
  • Applicants who at the time of application have been living in Germany more than 15 months cannot be considered.
  • The Doctorate degree has to be gained in the home country.
  • Proof of enrollment as Doctoral student at the home university must be enclosed.
  • Residence in Germany is subject to a time limit of 24 months.
  • German language skills are not expected.
  • Please regard that the beginning of your grant can only be in April or October. As a rule, the grant is preceded by a 4 or 6 months lasting language course (selection date is once a year, generally at the end of January).

Research stays for University Academics and Scientists
  • Application deadlines:
    1 October for stays as of February of the following year,
    1 April for stays as of August.
  • Applications must be submitted to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kampala
  • An appropriate flat-rate travel allowance will be paid.
