The student village celebrated its 60th birthday in 2013, which makes it one of the oldest halls of residence in Aachen. Planning for the hall began in 1950 and the project was supported by the Mc Cloy-Stiftung and the North Rhine-Westphalia state government. From the very beginning, the idea was that students should administer the student village themselves. This makes the student village different from other halls of residence, student hotels, and makes it special. The form of self-administration has changed over time, but the principle remained the same. There are no longer any supervisory assistants or teachers, but the structure of the village with village speakers, council and house speakers has proved successful and thus been retained. The self-administration project, unique over 60 years ago, is still a success story.
