University Programme on Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency in Senegal (PESEREE)

GIZ Senegal

Under the multilateral university cooperation PESEREE (Programme d’Enseignement Supérieur pour les Energies Renouvelables et l’Efficacité Energétique), the DAAD supports four universities in Senegal. The aim is to design a more application-oriented joint degree course in renewable energies.

Background

The creation of an efficient energy sector is one of the central goals of the current Senegalese development strategy. Among other things, measures to modernise the energy sector are aimed at significantly increasing the share of renewable energies in electricity generation, reducing the price of electricity, and developing rural electrification.

Within the scope of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency, one of the focal points of German development cooperation, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) supports the Senegalese government in implementing their goals and strategies in the energy sector.

To achieve successful modernisation, sufficient qualified staff with the relevant knowledge and skills are a necessary precondition. Universities mostly play a key role in qualifying these individuals and also contribute significantly to business start-ups and applied research. Degree courses in renewable energies have already been launched at some Senegalese universities; however, these are not sufficiently geared towards the needs of the labour market and future employability of graduates.

It is against this backdrop that the DAAD supports the multilateral university cooperation PESEREE, using funds from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The partner network comprises École Polytechnique de Thiès, Université Gaston Berger de Saint Louis, Université Assane Seck de Ziguinchor, and Université Alioune Diop de Bambey. These four universities jointly offer a degree course in renewable energies (Master Interuniversitaire en Energies Renouvelables, MIER).

Programme objectives

PESEREE aims to enhance the quality and relevance of training courses and degree programmes in the area of renewable energies and energy efficiency at selected Senegalese universities, especially for the labour market.

The university cooperation is supporting the four universities involved to design the already existing MIER degree course in a way to focus more on application and employability.

A further aim of the cooperation is to support the universities in developing a new two-year degree course in renewable energies and energy efficiency as a professional qualification.
