Internationalising the system of scientific research and innovation
The most important responsibilities of the DAAD include granting scholarships, promoting the internationalisation activities of German universities and research organisations, strengthening German cultural and language studies abroad and helping developing countries establish productive higher education institutions. The DAAD is also the National Agency for EU Higher Education Cooperation.
To support sustainable development DAAD offers both scholarships for studies – in Germany and within home regions – and university cooperation programmes. The programmes mainly enhance human capacity, further quality and relevance of learning, and contribute to solving global challenges.
EU higher education programmes like Erasmus+ play a significant role in the internationalisation of universities in Germany. The DAAD serves as Germany’s National Agency for EU Higher Education Cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
For the DAAD, the end of a scholarship marks the beginning of a long-term relationship with its alumni. Our aim is to foster connections among alumni and between the DAAD and alumni. We do this through a range of measures, from helping to set up alumni clubs to offering various funding programmes and activities.
