Since 1991 the DAAD has funded and set up a total of twenty-one Centres for German and European Studies in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Bulgaria, Russia, Israel, China, Japan and South Korea. Based at selected universities, where they focus on Germany and Europe related research and teaching activities, the Centres educate future generations of experts on Germany and Europe at graduate and postgraduate level. Through their publications and their list of events the Centres contribute significantly to an understanding of contemporary Germany in a wider European context within their respective host countries. In doing so, they continue to form networks with each other and engage in mutual projects and cooperation. Currently, the DAAD supports 17 Centres in eleven countries.
At the interdisciplinary Centres for German and European Studies, scientific research, contemporary politics and the interests of the general public are united in matters relating to Germany and Europe.
