Julián Sanz del Rio Prize

DAAD

With the aim of recognising academic cooperation between Spain and Germany and academic research on the respective other country, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Spain’s SEPIE (Fundación Universidad.es until 2015) present the Julián Sanz del Río Prize, which was first offered in 2010 and is awarded annually in changing disciplines.

Potential prize winners are excellent junior researchers from both countries who gained their doctorate at a German or Spanish higher education institution, have significantly studied the respective partner country in their field, and in so doing have made outstanding contributions to academic and cultural exchange between the two countries.

The upcoming call for nominations for the Julián Sanz del Río Prize will be dedicated to law and the social sciences.

The prize is presented at a joint event held by the DAAD and SEPIE in Madrid or Berlin.

Background

The prize is named for 19th century Spanish law scholar and philosopher Julián Sanz del Río. During a two-year study visit to Heidelberg, Sanz del Rio discovered the high reform potential of the Humboldtian university model for Spanish higher education institutions. His ideas launched an intensive academic exchange between Germany and Spain in the early 20th century.
