Important general information
- Applicants for grants lasting more than 6 months, for University Summer Course Grants for Advanced Students, or Course Completion Grants for Students reading German Studies must submit a language certificate to prove their knowledge of German: onDaF-Test.
- A DAAD language certificate is not required when a copy of one of the following certificates is submitted: PNdS, DSH, ZOP, GDS, KDS, DSDII, TestDaF (at least 4 points scored in each section), ÖSD C1 – Oberstufe Deutsch (=CEFR C1), ÖSD C2 – Wirtschaftssprache Deutsch (=CEFR C2), German or Austrian "Abitur" school-leaving certificate (e.g. from a bilingual grammar school).
- Even when applying for English instructed programmes, research stays or doctoral studies applicants must prove their German language skills.
- Applicants with only little knowledge of German (less than B2 level) who received a grant with a duration of more than 6 months will be invited by DAAD to a two months lasting obligatory language course in Germany (August/September). DAAD will pay the course fees.
- Proof of English language skills for English-instructed programmes is, as a rule, provided by submitting a TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge ESOL certificate. Only as an exception a DAAD language certificate form completed by a university teacher of English and with details on the applicant's English language skills may be accepted at first.
- Applicants for a short research grant (1 up to 6 months) or for a research stay for university academics and scientists (1 up to 3 months) need not prove their English or German language skills.
- Certificates: (final secondary-school examinations, university degree certificates). Copies of certificates must, at application, not yet be confirmed. But a translation of the certificates into German or English must be enclosed. Only after a successful final selection the correctness of the certificates and translation must be confirmed by the university or by a duly authorized translator.
- Applicants must ensure that the papers are complete and legible. They may be submitted in English or German; for University Summer Course Grants and Course Completion Grants for Students reading German Studies applications may only be submitted in German.
- All application papers must be submitted unbound, printed on one side only, in DIN A4-Format.
- Only complete applications that meet all the formal criteria are presented to the Selection Committee.
