The DAAD’s Berlin Artists-in-Residence Programme (Berliner Künstlerprogramm) is one of the most renowned international scholarship programmes for artists and artistes in the fields of visual arts, literature, music, film, dance and the performing arts. Each year, about 20 grants are awarded to international artists to come to Berlin, usually for one year. The names of the approximately 1,000 former artists in residence, are in themselves impressive proof of the programme’s high standard. The daadgalerie, a centre for art, literature and music located close to Checkpoint Charlie, is a good advertisement for the Berlin Artists-in-Residence Programme. It regularly hosts exhibitions, readings and presentations of the DAAD’s artists and artistes in residence.
From the outset, the Berlin Artists-in-Residence Programme defined itself as a forum for artistic dialogue across cultural, geographical and political borders. The effectiveness and liveliness of this forum is due not only to the work and presence of the artists in the city, but also to the 100 or so events hosted by the Berlin Artists-in-Residence Programme each year in conjunction with its guests, both in Berlin and elsewhere and, not least, to the international selection committees, which decide on the award of the scholarships. The charisma of the Berlin Artists-in-Residence Programme extends far beyond the German capital. Co-operation with various cultural institutions, museums, and literature and film festivals brings with it lasting and beneficial effects throughout Germany. Many former artists in residence remain in Germany after their DAAD funding comes to an end and enrich the cultural spectrum, for example as professors at German art colleges.
The Berlin Artists-in-Residence Programme, founded by the Ford Foundation in 1963 and taken over by the DAAD in 1964, is primarily funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, with a further contribution from the Berlin Senate.
