Centres of Excellence in Africa: African Executive Training at International Level

First DAAD convention of German and African partners on 22 and 23 January in Bonn

Bonn, 14 January 2009. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is setting up centres of excellence at key African universities to promote the development of future economic, political, and social leaders in Africa using resources from the "Aktion Afrika" project of the Federal Foreign Office. Apart from excellent professional support, they will also receive training in cross-discipline subjects such as Good Governance, Administration, Teambuilding, and Conflict Management. In close cooperation between German and African universities, five centres of excellence are being established. The project’s sponsors will meet for the first time in Bonn on 22 and 23 January.

The centres are supposed to give budding executives access to training at international level and represent key areas in Africa’s social development: the Ghanese-German Centre of Excellence for Development Research and Health Research, the Congolese-German Centre of Excellence for Micro-Finance, the Namibian-German Centre of Excellence for Logistics, the Tanzanian-German Centre of Excellence for Law, and the South African-German Centre of Excellence for Development Research and Criminal Justice. Each centre will receive annual funding of up to €500,000 for the purpose of financing lecturers and providing them with further training, improving the infrastructure, and developing modern courses of study.

A close cooperation between the expert centres will develop a partnership network for Africa’s future development and for working together with Germany. The principle of "true partnership" is of special significance in implementing this programme. This means the cooperation is to be achieved at eye level between the African and German partners. Dr. Albrecht Ehrensperger, from the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) of the University of Bern, will hold a talk on this subject on 22 January.

In June 2008, after a competitive invitation to tender directed at all German universities and select African universities, an independent selection committee chose these five outstanding cooperation projects between German and African universities from a total of 70 tenders. The centres largely offer interdisciplinary Master / PhD programmes, promote research activities, and award scholarships to high-performance students. Additional information is available on the web at http://www.daad.de/miniwebs/fachzentren-afrika/de/.

Journalists are very welcome to attend the presentation on the centres of Excellence due to be held at the Gustav-Stresemann-Institut in Bonn at 9:00 am on 22 January. Interviews with the participants may be held as of 11:00 am. Please register via e mail or by phone.
