The Dilemma of Choice: Aptitude Test helps Universities and Students

A TestAS allows Foreign University Applicants to Assess their Chances of Success

Bonn, 17 December 2008. A place at a German university is much sought after by foreign applicants. But how good are the prospects of getting a place and successfully completing one’s studies? And how can universities find an objective basis for comparing candidates from various countries and selecting those with the best prerequisites? Help is provided by TestAS, the Test for Academic Studies developed on behalf of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), now available as a full version. The test will be conducted on two occasions at worldwide testing centres in 2009. Registration for the first test deadline begins as of 5 January 2009.

The test was developed by ITB Consulting GmbH and the TestDaF-Institut and can be taken in German or English. It consists of a cross-discipline core test and a supplementary module for the respective study subject. The results provide information on the learning attitude of the applicants and so help guard against later student dropout rates. They aid the universities as a benchmark for selecting candidates as it is difficult to compare grades given in various countries. The admission offices are free to use whichever modules they like and can use their discretion in weighting them and choosing what form to combine the test results with other selection criteria.

In 2008, approximately 2,400 prospective students from 98 countries sat the TestAS. Some German universities have already made the test obligatory, for example the University of Berlin, for Business Administration and Economics applicants, and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 2009, the test will be conducted on 28 March and 10 October. The test fee is 100 euros. Useful information all about the TestAS and sample exercises are available at the website www.testas.de.
