New DAAD President Hormuth: ''More international competence and attractiveness!''

Bonn, January 15, 2008. As of January 1, Professor Stefan Hormuth has taken up the position as the new President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) . Today, Hormuth, who is also President of the Justus-Liebig University Giessen and Professor for Social Psychology, presented his future priorities at a press conference. ''I am very excited about my future work with the DAAD, which is the world’s largest organization for academic exchange and scientific cooperative work, and which is also held in very high regard internationally. I intend to make use of its networks and broad experience to further increase Germany’s ability to compete internationally, and to strengthen its attractiveness for students an scientists as an academic location. If we wish to maintain our connection to the leading nations in the area of education, greater political and financial efforts are called for,'' declared Hormuth.

The President emphasized moreover that the mobility of German students must be further improved. “The promise stated in the Bologna Process, which covers the comparability of qualifications and mobility, must be fulfilled; the dangers to internationality due to strict guidelines and lacking flexibility need to be countered through practical training abroad and double degrees in affiliation with other universities outside of Germany,” emphasized Hormuth.

“I am, however, also particularly interested in working closely with developing nations, above all those in Africa and Asia. This is where the DAAD can help people to help themselves by mutually establishing academic structures and by training educators. Right now, for example, five departments are being set up at African universities to help foster future senior faculty. These are the type of encouraging projects that I wish to expand,” he explained.

Professor Hormuth’s first contact with the DAAD dates back to 1975, when he received a scholarship to the University of Texas. He also conducted research and taught in the USA for several years, where he also earned his doctorate. In 1981, Hormuth relocated to the University of Heidelberg where he received his post doctoral lecturing qualification and, in 1987, was named Professor for Social and Ecological Psychology. In 1990 he transferred to the University of Giessen. From 1993 to 1997 he was active at the Technical University Dresden. Stefan Hormuth has been President of the Justus-Liebig University Giessen since 1997; in 2003 he was re-elected. Prof. Hormuth, who was born in Heidelberg, was also Vice President for International Affairs of the German Rectors’ Conference from 2001 to 2007.
