The workshop series International Dialogue on Education Berlin is a joint initiative of the British Council Germany, the German Academic Exchange Service, the German-American Fulbright Commission, the Australian Group of Eight and the Canadian Bureau for International Education in Berlin.
Through the contributions of international participants the series aims to enrich the debate on science, research and higher education policy in Germany, to place German perspectives in a global context and to learn from positive examples from other countries.

Interdisciplinary Research - Case Studies from Health and Social Science

Interdisciplinary research can pose a range of challenges to researchers in health and social science. This volume presents a series of case studies of successful interdisciplinary research programs, which provide a variety of models of how best to undertake interdisciplinary research in health and human science.

Reflections on crossing disciplinary lines abound in the scientific community. Can cross-disciplinary approaches, with all their complexity and particularities, provide the way forward in the search for practical solutions to real-world problems? In this article, the author addresses how the debate on cross-disciplinarization pertains to the field of policy evaluation. Evaluation is appropriate terrain for such a discussion as this particular field of social science seeks to produce useful knowledge for both managers and policy makers. As such, the author offers a general account of the advantages and disadvantages of cross-disciplinary evaluation. Because evaluation requires close collaboration between individuals from different domains and backgrounds, the author further outlines the specific challenges that face the practitioner when conducting a cross-disciplinary evaluation.
The potential of transdisciplinary research for sustaining and extending linkages between the health and social sciences.

The Potential of Transdisciplinary Research.pdf
The last decade of the twentieth century is witnessing a profusion of projects drawing together social and health scientists to study and recommend solutions for a wide range of health problems. The process--practiced in both developed and developing countries--is usually called multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary research. Its historical precedents are briefly reviewed in this paper along with the types of problems addressed. From a review and discussion of a sample of projects selected from two major proponents of this approach to research, the Social and Economic Research Component of the UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases and the Applied Diarrheal Disease Research Project, conclusions are drawn about the nature of contributions from such efforts.

Over the past two decades a variety of national and international efforts has sought to bring together health and social scientists to address complex health issues. This paper reviews how the notion of transdisciplinary research has emerged; discusses research programs that have successfully traversed discipline boundaries in sustained fashion; considers facilitating and constraining factors that have emerged from the analyses of this process; and suggests next steps for conceptualizing, organizing, and assessing transdisciplinary research based on the notion of heterarchy.
