Various German organisations provide scholarships for foreign students and academics, the most important ones are the DAAD Scholarships and the scholarships by Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation. Most scholarship programmes provide research grants. As tuition fees are waived in Germany (i.e. paid by the German government), there are no scholarships for Bachelor and Master programmes. Exceptions are the Scholarship for Artists and Architects and - to a limited extent - the Postgraduate Courses for Professionals with Relevance to Developing Countries. In addition, the University Summer Course Grants for Advanced Students of German and the Study Visits to Germany for Groups of Foreign Students are short term grants, which are mostly geared towards Bachelor and Master programmes.

A concise and thorough research proposal is essential for a successful application for all scholarship schemes. You should contact your German host institution as soon as possible and include a letter of invitation in your application. Please note that age limits are usually strictly adhered to. It is strongly recommended to contact one of the DAAD-representatives in Hong Kong to discuss your application and your research proposal.
