The "Grundstudium" is the basic study stage, i.e. the first part of a degree programme. Two types of exam are used to determine that a student has completed the basic study stage, namely either the Vordiplom or the Zwischenprüfung. In traditional degree programmes (Diplom, Magister, Lehramt), the basic study stage normally lasts from the first to the fourth semester. In Bachelor's programmes, the length and pathway of the basic study stage can differ quite substantially. Depending on university and programme, the basic study stage can last between two and four semesters. It is generally completed with a continuously assessed intermediate exam (written or oral).
