Measures for biodiversity are funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The funding is allocated to scientists and alumni of German higher education institutions, as well as other participants in the field of resource protection in developing countries as Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Please consult the DAC-list for countries that are eligible.
Aside from other initiatives, Germany made a commitment towards the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and thereby pursues the three goals of the CBD, namely the conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of its components, and fair and equitable benefit-sharing arising from genetic resources.
Institutions of higher education in developing countries play a key role in the conservation and management of biological diversity.
Improving teaching and research concerning biodiversity offers the chance to internationally connect those scientific insights with the political and social reality in developing countries, which constitute the framework for the protection of natural resources.
Education and further training of qualified junior scientists at the interface of nature protection and development aid is of great significance in the implementation of the modern nature and resource protection.
The funding provided by the DAAD measures for biodiversity, aims to support German institutions of higher education at the various academic levels of scientists, alumni, and students, to directly address those issues of biodiversity, which are immediately affected by the development in the partner countries, and which on their part directly influence the development of these countries.
The call for proposals for funding measures on biodiversity (for a project start in 2012) has closed by July 15th. 2011. The next call will be announced in spring 2012.
