Health is a sphere, which is affected by deficiencies in many other areas. These include hunger and poverty as well as the discrimination of women and environmental pollution. Those who wish to improve medical care, must therefore tackle a wide range of other policy issues. The competence centre of the University of Munich (LMU Centre for International Health (CIHLMU )) and its international cooperation partners address health problems in developing countries at many levels: research, education and development of political solutions. The project aims to enable partner universities to define their own education and research curricula, to become integrated in international intelligence networks, to put the results of their research into practice at political level and to consult decision makers competently. The aim is to train experts, who can contribute to the solving of country specific problems.

CIHLMU concentrates the existing excellence in the excellence centre in an centre with enough weight to make a significant contribution to the achievement of the MDGs. Four faculties and 12 institutes in 23 partnerships in Asia, South America and Africa are involved in the activities of CIHLMU .

The CIHLMU will initially concentrate on six partnerships with Vietnam, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Tanzania, South Africa and Chile, which can spread the expertise and excellence regionally. Using a three pillar concept, essential elements of the health system will be strengthened and expanded:

  • development of the vocational and continuing education at the partner institutions through the creation of innovative curricula and the improvement of teaching and clinics

  • promotion of high standard research to contribute to the MDG through the establishment of the PhD program "International Health”

  • training of experts and decision makers
