During the selection session on 7th and 8th of June 2009 the international peer review team in the presence of the consulting committee, representatives of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the DAAD discussed, deliberated and decided about 13 applications, that were presented by the candidates and their project partners. Five German universities and their partners in developing countries will receive up to 5 million EUR each for promoting development cooperation over the next five years. The projects were presented to the public by Federal Minister Wieczoreck-Zeul, Secretary-General of the DAAD Dr. Bode and Professor Dr. Thies, Secretary-General of the Standing Conference of
Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder (KMK) in an event in Berlin on 9th June 2009.

From 13th to 14th of January 2009 a selection commission consisting of international experts in presence of a consulting committee including organisations from academia and development co-operation, representatives of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and staff of the DAAD met in Bonn. The selection commission received 44 expressions of interest to build up so called "development co-operation competence centres” by the universities. The selection commission commended to discuss about 13 expressions of interests in a second phase of the application process. The 13 project proposals were presented to the public in a press conference in Bonn on 16th January 2009 by Prof. Dr. Messner, Prof. Dr. Shysanya, Dr. Bode and Dr. Blumbach. The first phase in the programme "Higher Education Excellence in Development Co-operation” is thus completed successfully.
