Road map to admission

Ausrufezeichen OrangeAdditional costs
Not only uni-assist, but also and increasingly the universities themselves require you to pay an application fee. Please remember that your application will only be processed once your payment has been paid into/credited to the specified account.

The admissions process also depends on what country you come from  and whether any admissions restrictions apply to your chosen degree programme. The following explain the key steps. Please also make sure that you contact the relevant Admissions Office (Zulassungsstelle) for information on the process.

1. Submit an Application for Admission to Studies:

Depending on the degree programme and your country of origin, you will have to send your application to one of various admissions offices:

For unrestricted subjects and subjects with local admissions restrictions:

Send your application direct to your chosen university or to uni-assist

For subjects with central (nationwide) admissions restrictions:

  • Applicants from the European Economic Area (= EU member states plus Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway) and Bildungsinlaender send their applications to the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung, Sonnenstraße 171, D-44128 Dortmund, Telephone +49 (0)231 1081-0, Fax: +49 (0)231 1081-227, http://www.hochschulstart.de
  • Applicants from non-EU/EEA countries send their applications direct to their chosen university or to uni-assist

All DAAD scholarship holders:

Unless otherwise stated in the programme description, your application will generally be processed via the DAAD.

2. The admissions office checks whether you meet all the requirements and conditions for admission to the requested degree programme:

  • Have you paid the admissions fees, where applicable?
  • Are your application papers complete and formally correct (have copies been officially certified)?
  • Do you meet the required conditions for admission to the requested degree programme (for example, your higher education entrance qualification, proof of aptitude, pre-study internships)?
  • Are your language skills adequate?

3. The admissions office will advise you in writing of the result of your application (by letter of rejection or letter of admission):

The letter of admission contains:

  • information on the study place awarded,
  • possibly, information on any achievements, credits or examinations that you still need to produce,
  • details on by when you must register (matriculate) at the university;
  • a letter of acceptance which you must send back to the Admissions Office by return post;
  • possibly, a date for the German language test that you still have to take;
  • if you are admitted to a Preparatory Course (Studienkolleg)  with pre-registration for a degree programme, the date of the Studienkolleg entrance exam.

A general admissions calendar

Please note down the following dates for applications to be sent to the International Offices, or to uni-assist, or to the Foundation for Higher Education Admission (Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung). These deadlines are final deadlines. If your application arrives even just one day later than this cut-off date, it will no longer be processed.

Application process for the winter semester:

  • The application period at most universities begins early June and ends on 15 July of the year in question (cut-off date)
  • Letters of admission are sent out in the period August/September of the year in question
  • Letters of rejection are sent out in the period September/October of the year in question

Application process for the summer semester:

  • The application period at most universities begins in early December of the previous year and ends on 15 January of the year in question (cut-off date)
  • Letters of admission are sent out in the period February/March of the year in question
  • Letters of rejection are sent out in the period March/April of the year in question

Beware: Some universities have different application periods and deadlines. The introduction of Bachelor's and Master's programmes means that admission is now mostly only possible in the winter semester, often involving an earlier application period and cut-off date. Please contact the university of your choice as early as possible to find out what the exact dates are for application and when courses begin.

DAAD Glossary

Einschreibung

"Einschreibung" and "Immatrikulation" mean registration or matriculation at a university. To register, students have to go to the registrar's office or the student registration office, often known in German as "Studierendensekretariat". They generally have to present their Admissions or Acceptance Letter (Zulassungsbescheid) and their Higher Education Entrance Qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung), generally a school-leaving certificate, like the Abitur or Fachhochschulreife. They also have to pay a registration fee.

Universität

"Universität" means university and is used for research universities (wissenschaftliche Hochschulen) that offer a broad range of subjects (like arts and humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, economics and business administration, law, medicine). These institutions confer doctorates. The strong research focus benefits students in their training. Please note, however, that English texts often use the term "university" generically, i.e. to cover all kinds of higher education institutions, for example, universities of the arts, universities of applied sciences, universities of education, etc.
