Study and research in Germany

International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt - AAA)

The International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt – AAA) is your first point of contact if you want to study in Germany. It's best to contact the International Office at the university of choice direct – by email, letter or phone. When preparing for your studies in Germany, this is also the office to contact for information on how to apply. You'll find out about Admissions Requirements (Zulassungsvoraussetzungen), Selection Processes (Auswahlverfahren) and about any Tuition Fees (Studiengebühren) that you may have to pay. You can find the addresses of the International Offices here:

These data have been kindly made available to the DAAD by the German Rectors' Conference - The Voice of the Universities.

Good initial help: Of course, you can also rely on the services offered by the International Offices when you arrive or are already studying in Germany. To make the start in your new home easier, many International Offices organise welcome parties, guided tours through the university town and tutoring programmes. Your personal tutor will help you complete the formalities with the authorities, like the Registration Authority (Einwohnermeldeamt) or the Foreigners Authority (Ausländerbehörde), will help you look for a place to live and open a bank account. Many International Offices also offer orientation events for foreign students. These are generally held between one and three weeks before the semester begins. Your Acceptance Letter (Zulassungsbescheid) will generally contain an invitation to these events. You can also find out when and where they are being held from the Student Council (AStA, UStA or StuRa) or from your Departmental Student Society (Fachschaft). We strongly advise you to attend these events, because they provide important information for your studies. And, of course, you can meet people and quickly make contact with fellow students, who, by the way, are known as "Kommilitonen" in German.

Reliable partners: So, you've mastered the initial phase and have already successfully completed a number of courses. Congratulations! Nevertheless, you may still find that you come across difficulties as you progress through your studies. For example, you might have problems with the Foreigners Authority, the Examinations Office (Prüfungsamt), or in finding or completing an Compulsory Internship (Pflichtpraktikum). No matter what it is, just ask your contact at the International Office for advice. Do it as early as possible and don't miss any important deadlines or appointments. The sooner you ask, the sooner and better they will be able to help you.
