The Master of Science in Information Technology has been designed as a full-time study course with a modular organisation and stands out due to the integrated intensive language training in German for foreign students, taught parallel to the technical subjects.
The subjects available are divided into different focus areas:
- Sensor Electronics
- Broadband Communications
- Biomedical Engineering
- Communication Systems
- Digital Signal Processing
- Embedded Systems
First year: two theory semesters with practical labs; third semester: R&D project (final thesis) at the department labs or in a company
Lectures (Lec.) and laboratories (Lab.) are usually combined (LL) and/or include a project (P.). Seminars (S.) include presentations.
Compulsory modules for the different focus areas:
- Analogue Electronics 2 (Lec.)
- Guided Waves and Optical Communications (Lec.)
- Sensors 2 (Lec.)
- Coding and Modulation (LL)
- Coding of Speech, Audio and Video (LL)
- Project Course Sensors and Mechatronics (Lab. & P.)
- Signal Processing Project Laboratory (LL)
- Embedded Systems 2 (LL)
Intensifying electives for the different focus areas:
- Introduction to Antenna Theory (Lec.)
- Manufacturing and Assembly Technology of Electronics (Lec. & S.)
- Design of Integrated Circuits (Lab. & P.)
- RF and Microwave CAE/CAD Systems (LL)
- Modelling and Simulation (LL)
- Quality and Project Management (Lec. & S.)
- Systems on Chip (LL)
- Digital Realtime Systems (LL)
- Digital Feedback Systems (LL)
- Robotics
- Seminar on Digital Communications (S.)
- Speech Processing (LL)
- Distributed Systems (L.L.)
Free electives for all focus areas:
- Mobile Radio Systems (Lec.)
- Neural Networks (LL)
- Applied Physics (Lec. & S.)
- Design of Digital Integrated Circuits (Lab. & P.)
- Software Project Management (LL)
- Business Administration for Managing Functions
- Biomedical Optics (Lec.)
- Biomedical Engineering (Lec.)
- Security for Computer Networks (Lec.)
- Statistics (Lec.)
- Web Engineering (Lec.)
Free elective for foreign students:
German as a Foreign Language (2 or 3)
Written examinations at the end of each semester. Many courses end with a practical project (mostly in a team), which is compulsory to pass the theoretical exams. All seminar projects, as well as the final thesis, are to be presented and defended orally.
A focus area comprises both compulsory subjects and intensifying electives up to
40 ECTS, electives with about 20 ECTS can be chosen freely (generally 5 ECTS per subject, 30 ECTS per semester) and 30 ECTS for the Master's thesis (as a full-time project over a period of six months).
Not compulsory but possible at some of our partner universities, for example Madrid (Spain) and Curitiba (Brazil) if language proficiency is adequate

- Essential and specific knowledge in electronics, telecommunications and computer-based information systems (both hardware and software)
- Profound specialisation permitting access to PhD studies
- Employability as main goal: optimal reproduction of the great variety of duties IT professionals perform, as well as conveying indispensable key skills for the professional career
- Special feature: actual integration of foreign students due to their command of German, multicultural skills for all participants
500 EUR per semester
101.50 EUR per semester (students services and enrolment)
650 EUR per month
Student assistantships are possible, but limited. EU-students are allowed to have a part-time job. Internship and Master's thesis in a company are remunerated.
A limited number of scholarships are available for graduates from partner universities.
Various forms of financial support for outstanding candidates might also be given.
Candidates will be informed of the different possibilities of support by the Coordination Office.
Applicants must provide proof of elementary command of German (at least A2).
Proficiency in German (DSH 2 or equivalent) is required for the MSc degree (not for admission).

Bachelor's degree (BSc) or equivalent in Telecommunications, Electronics, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering
Your average grade must equal or better 2.5 in the German grading system. International grades will have to be converted accordingly.
directly at the university
Foreign students can book a room in advance. Student tutors - mostly from the same country - support them after arrival (e.g. pick up, accommodation, bank account, Registration Office). Both the university's International Office and the department's Coordination Office offer support in all necessary steps in and outside the university during the whole stay.
Contact in several languages possible. Personalised guidance and counselling in academic as well as non-academic issues. Intensive and extensive language programme. Comprehensive support by the Department, the Coordination Office and the International Office.
Special focus on Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries in Europe and Latin America
A compulsory four-month traineeship is to be undertaken at some time within the three (max. five) semesters. Equivalent work experience in industry may replace the traineeship (subject to approval).
As more and more companies not only require but also offer traineeships as a kind of orientation period before the student actually begins the Master's thesis, this academic regulation especially helps non-EU programme participants gain access to projects in industry.
Student halls of residence run by the university's international office in cooperation with students social services. Reservation is possible after admission (subject to availibility); monthly rent for single rooms is approx. 240 EUR.
With approx. 4,500 students, 160 professors, over 100 part-time lecturers and more than 300 technicians and administrative staff, the Hochschule Mannheim is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg. With all the assets of a modern university campus, the Hochschule Mannheim provides students with ideal conditions to meet the requirements posed by the professional careers they have set their sights on. Close working contacts with industry, professional associations and cultural institutions, together with the Karl Völker Foundation affiliated to the university, represent an ideal breeding ground for internationally acclaimed research and development activities. For many years the Hochschule Mannheim has been one of the most research-intensive universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg. As such, it enables its students to participate in a wide range of research and development projects prior to graduation.
Mannheim is the second biggest city in Baden-Württemberg. It is conveniently situated to reach the international airports in Frankfurt and Stuttgart in only 30 minutes and has excellent train connections (about five hours) to metropolitan areas such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Paris or Zurich. The city is close to the famous university town of Heidelberg and to beautiful forests, the "Deutsche Weinstraße" and the French region of Alsace with their quaint villages, distinctive cuisine and wine. Internationally renowned research institutions and global companies need our graduates' expertise here and in surrounding regions as well as elsewhere in Germany or abroad.
