Study and research in Germany

All Courses

HRK Logo Hochschulführer englischSo, you'd like to study, do research or complete a continuing education course in Germany?
The Higher Education Guide which the DAAD publishes in cooperation with the German Rectors' Conference - The Voice of the Universities - will show you which German universities or colleges offer the subject of your choice.

You can find our information on study opportunities in Germany in two separate databases. Please select the appropriate database on the basis of your academic qualifications:

  1. If you hold a secondary school leaving certificate or a higher education entrance qualification and now want to take up a course of academic study in Germany in order, for example, to gain a Bachelor's degree or a German degree, such as a Diplom, Magister or Staatsexamen:
Then please use the database on "First Degree Studies"
  2. If you already hold a first academic degree awarded in your home country, such as a Bachelor's degree, and now want to continue your studies in Germany in order, for example, to gain a Master's degree or to attend a postgraduate degree course or perhaps you would like to attend a Master Class or gain a Konzertexamen degree:
Then please use the database on "Graduate Studies".

DAAD Glossary

Hochschule

"Hochschule" is the generic term for the various kinds of higher education or tertiary level institutions (Hochschultypen), such as universities, universities of applied sciences or colleges of art, film or music (Kunst-, Film- und Musikhochschulen), or colleges of education (Pädagogische Hochschulen).

Master

An internationally-recognised academic degree awarded for a programme that often builds on a previous Bachelor's degree. Master's programmes last between two and four semesters.

Universität

"Universität" means university and is used for research universities (wissenschaftliche Hochschulen) that offer a broad range of subjects (like arts and humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, economics and business administration, law, medicine). These institutions confer doctorates. The strong research focus benefits students in their training. Please note, however, that English texts often use the term "university" generically, i.e. to cover all kinds of higher education institutions, for example, universities of the arts, universities of applied sciences, universities of education, etc.
