Programme Description
The Akademie Schloss Solitude is a public foundation. It offers an international scholarship programme to promote and fund young artists. So, since 1990, the programme has selected 50 to 70 award holders once every two years from the fields of fine/visual arts and performing arts, architecture, music, literature, design, film/video, and theatre to complete their own project over a period lasting from 6 to 12 months.
Since this is a residential grant, the award holders are also expected to spend most of their time at Schloss Solitude. This is why they are provided with an apartment, a studio and 1,000.- euros per month. They also receive a number of additional allowances.

Target Group
These awards give artists from the fields of the fine and visual arts, performing arts, architecture, music, literature, design, film/video, and theatre the opportunity to complete a project of their own.

Number of Scholarships
50 to 70 award holders are chosen every 2 years.

Term
Scholarships can be awarded for 6 or 12 months. Extensions are possible on an individual case by case basis; decisions on extensions are made by the juror responsible for the field in question.

Scholarship Value
The Schloss Solitude award is a residential grant. Guests are expected to spend at least two thirds of their funded time (the award term) at Schloss Solitude.

The scholarship covers the following items:

  • A furnished apartment/studio including electricity, water, heating costs.
  • An award of 1,000.- euros per month and travel expenses for one return journey to and from Schloss Solitude.
  • Maintenance allowance for two households (rent or studio allowance); transport allowance for material, tools and instruments to and from Stuttgart; project funding and a one-off materials allowance; contribution towards health insurance costs for foreign guests from non-EU countries.

The award holders can also use the academy's in-house workshops available free of charge, under the supervision of the workshop manager.

Due to the historical background of the building, its apartments and studios are generally only suitable for one person in terms of size and fixtures/furnishings. In special cases, the academy can combine two studios for families.

All invited artists officially register their permanent residence in Stuttgart during the term of the award (compulsory registration).

Application Requirements

  • It is assumed that the guests will spend at least two thirds of their funded stay on Schloss Solitude.
  • Scholarships are awarded to artists who graduated from their studies no longer than 5 years ago or who are no older than 35 years of age.
  • A knowledge of one of the three languages German, English or French is required.
  • Simultaneous applications to the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg GmbH and the Akademie Schloss Solitude are not allowed.
