Conflict Studies and Management Programme at the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy in Erfurt - Scholarships for Doctoral and Master’s Students and Research Fellowships

The Conflict Studies and Management Programme (CSMP) is a study and research programme at the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy at the University of Erfurt carried out jointly with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The CSMP addresses both Master’s or doctoral students and senior researchers with an interest and a proven track record in research and practise in the field of conflict management.

The Willy Brandt School of Public Policy at the University of Erfurt is one of the leading public policy schools in Germany. Since 2002 the School’s Master programme has been committed to training students for management and leadership positions in the public and non-profit sector. The Conflict Studies and Management Programme focuses on (policy) issues relevant to regions of conflict. It looks at conflict studies and management with a special interest in how policy-making and public policy as a research perspective (discipline) needs to be re-thought in the context of conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction efforts. Originally, the key concepts in the field of public policy were based on the implicit assumption of strong institutions and stable political conditions. However, nowadays it is becoming apparent that these approaches need to be revised to understand the special conditions and challenges in regions of conflict. In particular, the role of governments, international actors and NGOs as policy-makers in conflict areas, fragile states and war-torn countries will be considered in the CSMP.

The CSMP is designed for highly-qualified international Master’s and doctoral students as well as senior scientists. On the Master’s level, CSMP scholarships offer excellent students who want to pursue a career in relevant organisations in the area of conflict management the opportunity to obtain a Master’s degree with a specialisation in Conflict Studies and Management.

High-achieving students striving for an academic career and holding an appropriate Master’s degree may apply for CSMP doctoral scholarships. The PhD programme is a three-year-track combining independent research and course work on an advanced level.

CSMP fellowships support international researchers with innovative practice-oriented research projects who strive at identifying effective policies related to conflict management, peace building and conflict resolution. Fellows will have a teaching commitment at the Brandt School of about 2 hours per week and are expected to actively participate in the programme’s further institutional development.

CSMP scholarships and fellowships are defined and awarded on an annual basis. Each year, the fellowship announcement will indicate the specific qualification requirements.
