Study and research in Germany

DAADblog

Describing life in Germany!

The DAADblog started of in September 2008. Meanwhile a total of 15 students from all over the world have blogged about their time in Germany - in German or English. Medical student Nienke from South Africa is the only one remaining, who has been part of it right from the beginning. Like Hery from Madagascar and Ignacio from Mexico she writes in German though.

The "English Team" consists of the PhD-students Ram from India, Lucia from Spain and Paul from Kenia.

Nevertheless the DAAD is always searching for even more foreign students, who would like to share their experience in Germany with others by writing about them. In case you are interested to join our blog, get in touch with us and send us an email.

Tuesday: Lucia from Spain

Lucia from Spain, Picture: privatMy name is Lucia Contreras Garcia and I'm 27 years old. For two years I have been living in Cologne already, doing my PhD in linguistics. My study focuses upon differences between three germanic languages (English, German and Dutch) and three romanic ones (French, Italian and Spanish) and how they show a series of discrepancies between their semantic and syntactic level according to the model (derivational or non-derivational) one uses to analyse them and this, according to the conception of the syntax-semantics interface of the model being used.

Besides Cologne I have also lived in Tours and Toulouse (France), Edinburgh (Scotland) and Brussels (Belgium).

Thursday: Ram from India

Ram from India, Picture: privateI am Ram Shankar, Velur Selvamani from Chennai, India. I hold a Masters in Biotechnology from Anna University, Chennai. I am 24 years old and I have got my DAAD scholarship to pursue my doctorate studies in Bioverfahrenstechnik at the Friedrich - Alexander Universitaet Erlangen - Nuernberg.

I am a friendly and easy-going person and I love helping people and sharing ideas with them. I am a keen listener as well as an enthusiastic speaker and I do not miss any chance to actively take part in debates among groups of friends in wide-ranging topics. I like to learn more from my interactions with people. Nevertheless, I believe a man matures and gains more knowledge in every aspect of life, more from his own life experiences than anything else. That is why I want to share my experieinces in Germany with other aspiring students so that it would certinly benefit them in someway in the future. In today’s world, right information at the right time is everything.

My hobbies range from taking a stroll amid natural surroundings and admiring them to reading up on early medieval period warriors and long-forgotten battles. Nature, animals and historical literature (mostly from internet and documentary films on TV) interest me the most.

I first saw Germany through Frankfurt am Main Flughafen. To say I was overwhelmed would be understatement! I felt like the whole of Frankfurt city was contained within the airport! It was so huge and so busy. Just imagining the kind of work involved in managing such a huge magnitude of critical parameters - different people from different backgrounds, different languages, so many so many levels, flights from so many countries, departures, arrivals, time schedules, connecting flights - simply mind blogging! But everything keeps going smoothly. And I had had my first taste of German efficiency!
