Self-assessment tests

Before you register for a German test or language course, you should find out exactly how good your German skills are. The following is an overview of several assessment tests, all of which are available online.  

Deutsch testen, Bild: Lichtenscheidt/DAAD 1. Online "German as a Foreign Language” Assessment Test (onDaF)

This test is unique in that it only exists on the Internet. It allows you to precisely measure your level of German proficiency based on categories used in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. You may take the onDaF test at any of the licensed testing centres around the world. The onDaF serves as proof of language proficiency if you wish to apply, for example, for a DAAD scholarship. You can practice taking the onDaF at home with this sample test.

2. TestDaF "Fill-in-the-blank” test  

By taking this free fill-in-the-blank test, the TestDaF Institute can tell you within minutes whether you’re ready to take the TestDaF.

3. Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO) assessment test

DUO offers registered users a free assessment test which measures one’s German proficiency level. If you are interested in taking a DUO language course, this test serves as a basis for selecting the course that matches your language level.

4. Goethe Institute multiple choice assessment test

By answering 30 multiple-choice questions, this fast, straightforward test can assess your proficiency level based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Take the assessment test now!
