Kelly Kim
My name is Kelly Kim, and I am a 19-year-old undergraduate student at Yale University in New Haven, CT, USA. I just completed my second year of study, and I plan to major in either chemistry or music, or both (though I am currently declared as chemistry). I first heard about the RISE program during my first year of college and was immediately interested in applying because I have always liked the idea of studying or working abroad in a European nation. I read many of the student-written reviews about the RISE program, all of which were extremely positive and praised the program highly for its friendly atmosphere, advanced laboratory equipment, and cultural richness. Since one of the options I am considering for my post-college years is to pursue a Ph.D degree in chemistry, I think it would be extremely helpful for me to spend a whole summer working in a chemistry lab (specifically, organic chemistry, as that is my favorite field of chemistry) to see if that is the career I wo uld like to pursue. Additionally, as music is also a very important part of my life, I am excited to travel to and live in the country that contributed so much to the development of the music I treasure so deeply. During my time in Germany this summer, I hope to not only sharpen my laboratory skills and assess my feelings toward the field of chemistry but also deepen my appreciation of Western music and acquire a working knowledge of the German language–also an important aspect of music appreciation. Additionally, I believe that living and working in Germany will expand my horizons and help me be even more self-sufficient when I return to the United States.
Enough food and drink sampling at Anuga? How about some German technology? Just outside Hall 8 of the fair, a mini Zeppelin was spotted hovering above our heads. This fascinating craft is operated by Friedrich, a 20-year-old electrical engineering undergraduate. He flies this Zepplin nine hours a day and walks about at the north entrance [...]
