Viele von euch haben in den Semesterferien Klausuren. Obwohl ich schon fertig mit dem Studium bin, habe ich in den Semesterferien auch immer Klausuren. Denn als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin unterstütze ich zusammen mit meinen Kollegen meinen Chef bei der Vorbereitung, der Durchführung und der Korrektur von Klausuren. Und ich kann euch eins sagen: es ist fast genauso viel Arbeit, wie für eine Klausur zu lernen

Eine gute Klausur sollte überprüfen, ob die Studenten das behandelte Thema verstanden und sich mit ihm auseinandergesetzt haben. Die Aufgabenstellung übernimmt bei uns immer der Chef, was ich auch für sehr sinnvoll halte. Schließlich waren wir, die Mitarbeiter, nicht bei den Vorlesungen anwesend und können nicht einschätzen, wo er seine Schwerpunkte gelegt hat. Danach beginnt allerdings unsere Arbeit. Wir müssen zunächst das Organisatorische klären – wo und wann wird die Klausur geschrieben, welche Hilfsmittel sind erlaubt u.ä. Dann müssen wir eine Lösungsskizze anfertigen und uns eine Bewertung überlegen. Das wird dann natürlich alles vom Chef nochmal abgesegnet. Am Klausurtag machen wir die Klausuraufsicht und schließlich müssen wir die Klausuren korrigieren. Das ist manchmal eine ziemlich langwierige und undankbare Aufgabe. Ich kann nur an euch appellieren, immer schön zu schreiben. Denn wenn ein Korrektor eure Schrift nicht entziffern kann, ist sie/er meistes so schlecht gelaunt und wird sich im Zweifelsfall für die schlechtere Note entscheiden.

Ich glaube, dass am Ende, wenn die Klausuren endlich vorbei und alle korrigiert sind, alle froh sind – die Studis aber auch die Professoren und die Mitarbeiter!

This Saturday I wanted to do nothing else except sit at my desk and apply for jobs. I planned ahead for this the night before by staying in and getting a good nights rest. However, as I woke from my slumber Saturday morning I knew quite instantly I wouldn’t be able to stay indoors past breakfast.

The sun was finally out, and not only was the sun out, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Had spring finally arrived? As I opened my window and let the fresh air enter my room I remembered back to the first week I arrived in Germany, and attempted to bike down the path next to the Rhine River. I only made it about 15 minutes before I had to turn back because my feet, hands, and face were freezing, and I was completely miserable. Finally, I would be able to go on that bike ride I had been wanting to take for the past three months.

We rode from Oberkassel, my neighbourhood, to Königswinter a town just a bit south from us. It was quickly apparent that I wasn’t the only one who had been waiting impatiently for the warmer, sunny weather to arrive. The streets of Königswinter were packed with people trying to enjoy every second of this beautiful day. People were walking on the Rhine, people watching from cafes and shopping at the outdoor flea markets.

From Königswinter we climbed a small mountain where the ruins of the Count of Drachenfels castle remains, named after the slain dragon that lived in the cave near the top of the mountain. Along the way there were many cute little restaurants were you could drink coffee with a beautiful, elevated view of the Rhine. There was also a man selling fresh honey on the side of the path we were climbing. His hives were next to his stall shop and you could see the bees fast at work. I got a good chuckle out of this man who had decorated two of his hives with the faces of George W. Bush and Bin Laden. A bit of irony when you looked at it, these two would now be terrorized by the bees who entered their hives through each of their mouths.

The day was wonderful, and as I arrived back home I could hardly wait for it to be Sunday, so I could again enjoy the start of spring. Unfortunately, it was only a tease, an allusion of the beginning of spring, since Saturday the weather has gone back to being dreary and cold, and the near forecast doesn’t look any better. Oh well, maybe this weekend I can work a bit on my job applications.

So viel vor, alle Pläne geschmiedet, mit Vorfreude bereit…und dann wird man krank. Kennt ihr das nicht auch? Das ganze Semester Stress (bei manchen vielleicht hin und wieder mal Langeweile) und selten Zeit, viel zu unternehmen, geschweige denn irgendwohin zu fahren!

Und dann endlich, endlich sind sie da die lang ersehnten Ferien und man muss erst eine gewaltige Auszeit nehmen weil der Körper zunächstmal andere Dinge auf dem Programm hat.

Dann fallen einem auch schön “zeitig” plötzlich noch ein paar Dinge auf, um die man sich vorher wohl noch nicht gekümmert hat. Ich hatte auf jeden Fall nicht daran gedacht, dass ich mir in einer neuen Stadt vielleicht auch einen Hausarzt suchen sollte

Und das alles obwohl es doch gar nicht passt und man doch so viel andere Dinge vor hatte…aber vielleicht ist es auch besser so, als mitten im Semester oder zur Prüfungszeit. Und, im Urlaub und beim Reisen kann es einem ja eigentlich nur noch besser gehen!

Viel Spaß, falls ihr auch weg fahrt oder verreist oder einfach nur mal die eigene Stadt mal so genießen könnt!

Ihr habt sicherlich schon mitbekommen, dass die Zeiten wirtschaftlich gerade nicht so rosig sind. Auch in meinem Umfeld sind die Auswirkung der Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise inzwischen angekommen. Einige meiner gut qualifizierten Kollegen, die als Anwälte tätig waren, wurden gekündigt. Die großen internationalen Wirtschaftskanzleien stellen zurzeit nicht ein. In solchen Zeiten ist es unglaublich viel wert, zu wissen, dass man finanziell abgesichert ist.

Ich habe mir natürlich auch darüber Gedanken gemacht und überlegt, was sich mehr lohnt: jetzt Geld auszugeben oder doch lieber zu sparen? Aber eigentlich gefällt mir beides nicht so richtig. Wenn ich jetzt viel Geld ausgebe,

kurbele ich vielleicht die Wirtschaft an, habe aber später nicht genug, um meinen Lebensstandard zu halten (der übrigens als Studentin nicht so hoch ist  ). Keiner weiß so richtig, wie sich die Krise entwickelt und wann sie endlich vorbei ist. Und eventuell werde ich nach der Promotion wirklich Probleme haben, eine Stelle zu finden. Deswegen ist es sicherlich gut, ein paar Ersparnisse zu haben. Auf der anderen Seite wird das Geld bei den Banken, die jetzt leider nur sehr niedrige Zinsen anbieten, im Prinzip entwertet. Denn die Inflationsrate steigt. Irgendwie „tut es weh“, dass das hart ersparte Geld bei den Banken im Wert schrumpft. Und für einen Goldbarren reicht das Geld leider noch nicht . Ich denke deswegen, dass der Mittelweg wie so oft, der richtige sein wird…Ein bisschen sparen aber sich gelegentlich auch etwas gönnen.

Was denkt ihr? Vielleicht könnt ihr mir ja auch ein paar Tipps geben.

It had been about two years since I had seen a live concert, and this is an embarrassing admission when as a college student I had tickets to see some live show just about every other weekend. Thankfully the dry spell ended this weekend when I went to see The Killers, live, in Düsseldorf.

I hadn’t even planned on going, the tickets were given to me as a Christmas present from my boyfriends family, and I eagerly accepted them, as The Killers are one of my favourite bands. So this past Friday my host sister, her friend, and I packed into a car with some of The Killer’s CDs and drove to Ddorf. The show was great and the band sounded phenomenal. They honestly sounded better than the recordings found on their CDs. Not only did they play tracks from their new album, they played all their crowd pleasers, and I mean every last one of them. I don’t think their was a disappointed fan in the music hall.

Now that I have brought up the ‘music hall’ I have to state what was wrong with the night. I hated the venue! The concert was located at Philipshalle which is an indoor sports arena. The problem is that the building was designed for sporting games not concerts. The area where most of the concert goers must stand to watch, is on the big flat surface area where teams play each other. There was some stadium seating along the outskirts of the playing field, but because the concert was at one end of the hall those seats weren’t necessarily good either, and my ticket was a standing one.

Unfortunately, we didn’t arrive early enough to get a good standing spot, and were closer to the back of the hall. With thousands of people’s heads bobbing in front of me, all on one flat level, I didn’t see much of the band. I had to step on my tippy tows just to take a picture of Brandon Flowers, the lead singer. To be honest, about all I saw was the strobe lights, which happened to be quite colorful.

All in all, the concert exceeded my expectations, at least where the music was concerned. And on that note, I leave you with my favourite line from The Killers, Smile like you mean it.

I come from India, which is very big in comparison to Deutschland and therefore has a much bigger population, so when I first landed here I was surprised to see the scanty amount of people on the roads, in the buses, trams etc. and thought may be its some kind of holiday but gradually I encountered things which were quite new to me like the dogs do not bark and are soooo obedient, the kids do not cry!!! And trust me I haven’t seen a single kid crying since I have come here, anyways my list of surprises will take a lot of time so I can carry on with it some other time. People here have been good and warm which was quite contrary to what I had heard before coming here. All in all its been a good experience till now.

I have seen the beautiful summer of Germany with lots and lots of sunshine, the colourful autumn and the snowy, chilly and the very very long winters. So finally friends after the long dark nights and no sunshine its now time to cheer up again as the spring has arrived. So its time now for more fun!!!!

Jetzt hat auch bei mir endlich die vorlesungsfreie Zeit richtig begonnen. Das Ferienpraktikum ist überstanden und wir können uns auf ein bisschen freie Zeit , Urlaub und hoffentlich bald wärmeres Wetter freuen!

Wenn man nun aber auch mal was Richtiges unternehmen will, werden die Dinge plötzlich wieder ein ganz klein bisschen komplizierter. Ich weiß nicht, wie das bei euch immer lief, aber wenn wir mit der Familie in Urlaub gefahren sind, musste ich mich selten wirklich um die ganze Organisation kümmern…das hatten die Eltern übernommen

Nun, wo man ja jetzt endlich auf eigenen Füßen steht, bekommt man plötzlich immer wieder mal neue Verantwortung und Aufgaben, die man zuvor für selbstverständlich hielt. Und es ist alles gar nicht so einfach, wie das früher bei Mama so schien!!

Aber trotzdem verschwindet eines nicht: die Vorfreude und das Gespanntsein auf alles was man Neues erleben wird und die Orte, die ich nun zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben sehen und besuchen werde.

“…das Genie beherrschts das Chaos.” Ich habe schon oft dieses Sprichwort gehört, musste es (zum Glück) aber noch nie zu meiner Verteidigung aussprechen. Ich bin zwar bemüht, mein Zimmer sauber und ordentlich zu halten, weil ich mich sonst unwohl fühlen würde. Aber ich übertreibe es auch wieder nicht. Ihr wisst bestimmt, was ich meine. Vor allem mein Schreibtisch sieht ab und zu recht chaotisch aus. Aber ich finde mich dort immer gut zu Recht. Nichts desto trotz wurde es heute wieder Zeit für einen kleinen Frühjahrsputz!

wischen…und fertig! Und weil es so schön war, ist am Wochenende das ganze Zimmer dran.

Wenn ihr euch jetzt fragt, wie lange der Schreibtisch so ordentlich bleibt, kann ich euch sofort antworten. Sobald ich mich wieder an den Laptop setze, um seriös zu arbeiten, wird die Ordnung zur Nebensächlichkeit. Dann beherrscht wieder das kreative Chaos meinen Schreitbisch.

After a bunch of crazy weekends of celebrating Karneval and traveling I decided to take a break this past weekend. However, whenever I decide I am going to relax and not go out to any bars or clubs I am always left wondering, what else is there for me to do? It is really hard for me to just lie around and actually relax. I still like to be entertained somehow. If I was in the US the answer to this problem would be simple, go to the movies. But it is not so easy when you live in a foreign country, and your grasp of the language there is less than par. You first must find a place that caters to showing movies in English.

That is why a little place called the Metropolis in Köln is my favourite place to go when I need to relax, but don’t want to just stay put at home. It is a movie theatre that shows movies in their original tone, and it isn’t just for the English speaking foreigners in this area. Many Germans who don’t like listening to the awkward dubbing of Hollywood movies also like to watch the films in their original version.

The theatre itself isn’t very big, There are three rooms showing movies and all the rooms are quite small, however there is a great snack bar that caters to any movie fans desires. Sweet and salty popcorn, all types of coffee, nachos, beer, and ice-cream just to name a few. Also, I recommend getting there quite early. The first movie I went to, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, was a packed house. Every seat was full and the last group of people to mosey on in were left sitting apart from their friends in the last open seats available. Even though it is small, it is still a great place to hang out. I plan on seeing the Reader starring Kate Winslet next.

Gestern bin ich wieder mal Ski gefahren (endlich!). Um 6:35 Uhr habe ich die Auge geöffnet und fünf Minuten später bin ich wirklich aufgewacht. Glücklicherweisse hab ich das wie “instinktiv” gemacht, denn ich habe den Wecker gar nicht gehört. In den Ferien bin ich gewöhnt mindestens bis zum 11 Uhr zu schlafen, deshalb, als ich aufgewacht bin, dachte ich, dass es zu spät wäre, weil alles so hell aus sah. Zum Glück war es nicht so.

Vorgesternd Abend hatte ich was zum Essen (drei hartgekochte Eier, Schwarzbrot und Salami) und zum Trinken (Vanille-Kokosnus-Schwarzertee mit Honig, ich empfehle das) vorbereiten, weil ich mit dem Bauch leer nicht Sport treiben kann he-he. Um Viertel nach 7 hatten wir uns getroffen und sind abgefahren. Um 9 Uhr sind wir in Oberwiesenthal im Erzgebirge angekommen. Der Ort liegt ganz genau an der Grenze zwischen Deutschland und Tschechein. Noch eine merkwürdige Angabe, mit 914 m hoch ist die höchstgelegene Stadt Deutschlands (aus Wiki).

Einige Tage vorher war ich ein bisschen skeptisch, da ich dachte, dass es dort kaum geschneit hätte, aber als wir da angekommen sind, oder besser gesagt, als wir auf dem Weg waren, hat es zu schneien angefangen und als wir da waren, haben wir an den Dächern von den Häusern gemerkt, dass es einigen Wochen früher ungefähr ein Meter geschneit hat. Weil ich keine Ausrüstung außer Handschuhen und Brillen hatte, habe ich Ski, Stöcke und Skyschuhe nur für 15 € gekreigt. Plus die 20 € ( oder 19 € mit Studentenausweis) von dem Ticket, 34 € insgesamt. Das fand ich relativ günstig im Vergelich zu Chile.

Was mir aber nicht gut gefallen hat, war, dass man die Tickets mit einem komischen elastischen Band festbinden musste. Ein Freund ist einmal gefallen und das elastische Band hat sich geschnitten. Nachher ist er Berg hoch hinaufgelaufen, aber hat es leider nicht gefunden und musste ein neues Ticket für drei Stunde für 13 € kaufen…Pech… Was ich noch nicht so toll fand, war, dass es den ganzen Tag ununterbrochen geschneit hat. Das war eigentlich nicht so schlim, aber es war manchmal sehr windig, und wenn es so ist, ist es ganz unangenehm, weil die Sichtbarkeit sehr schlecht ist (das ist manchmal sehr gefährlich), es ist sehr kalt und es tut weh, wenn der Schnee ins Gesicht kommt. Zum Glück hatte ich eine Schutzmaske dabei. Trotzdem war es eine ganz schöne Erfahrung, obwohl ich noch Muskelkater habe haha.
