The workshop series International Dialogue on Education Berlin is a joint initiative of the British Council Germany, the German Academic Exchange Service, the German-American Fulbright Commission, the Australian Group of Eight and the Canadian Bureau for International Education in Berlin.

Through the contributions of international participants the series aims to enrich the debate on science, research and higher education policy in Germany, to place German perspectives in a global context and to learn from positive examples from other countries.

Rolf Hoffmann, Executive Director of the German-American Fulbright Commission

Rolf Hoffmann

Rolf Hoffmann, since 2004 Executive Director of the German-American Fulbright Commission in Berlin, studied biological sciences at Duke University (N.C., USA) and the University of Tübingen and received his doctoral degree in 1983, followed by an appointment as assistant professor of zoology at the University of Karlsruhe. He joined the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn in 1985 as policy and program officer and later as deputy head of the selection department.

Since 1991 he has worked in different capacities mainly for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Bonn, first as Program Director for all DAAD activities in North America and Europe, and then as Director of the DAAD North America office in New York, with an interim (1999-2000) as Director of the German-American Academic Council in Bonn and Washington, D.C.

In 2001 Rolf was appointed Director of Germany's new International Marketing Initiative, a joint effort of the Federal Government, the universities and DAAD for the international promotion of study and research in Germany. Until 2004 he also headed the German university marketing consortium GATE Germany with more than 100 member institutions as director, a position which enabled him to gain extensive experience in higher education policy and management, and marketing higher education abroad.
